Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Kelowna.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Kelowna is generally considered safe and straightforward. The roads are well-maintained and the traffic rules are strictly enforced. However, during winter months, driving can be challenging due to snow and ice, so it's important to be prepared for these conditions. Also, be aware that Kelowna is a popular tourist destination, so traffic can be heavy during peak tourist season.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Most people in Kelowna drive compact to mid-size cars, SUVs, or trucks. If you plan to do a lot of driving in the winter, a vehicle with four-wheel drive is recommended. Also, consider a car with good fuel efficiency as gas prices in Canada can be high.

3. Parking in Kelowna

Finding parking in Kelowna is generally not difficult, especially in residential areas. However, in the downtown area and popular tourist spots, it can be more challenging. Parking fees vary depending on the location, but they are generally affordable. Some areas also have free parking, but these spots can fill up quickly.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in British Columbia (the province where Kelowna is located) with an international driver's license for up to six months. After that, you will need to get a British Columbia driver's license.

5. Getting a Driver's License

To get a driver's license in British Columbia, you will need to pass a knowledge test and a road test. The knowledge test is based on the information in the driving guide, which is available online and in driver licensing offices. If you have a valid driver's license from another country, you may be able to exchange it for a British Columbia driver's license without taking the road test.

6. Be Aware of Wildlife

One unique aspect of driving in Kelowna, and in Canada in general, is the possibility of encountering wildlife on the road, especially in rural areas. Be vigilant, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active.

7. Winter Driving

Winter driving in Kelowna can be challenging due to snow and ice. It's important to have winter tires and to be familiar with how to drive in these conditions. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions.
