Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Medellin.

1. Understanding the Traffic

Driving in Medellin can be quite challenging, especially for newcomers. The city is known for its heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. The roads can be narrow and winding, and local drivers are known for their aggressive driving style. It's important to be alert and cautious at all times.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Medellin due to the narrow and crowded streets. SUVs or 4x4s can also be a good choice if you plan to explore the mountainous regions around the city. However, keep in mind that larger vehicles may be more difficult to park.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Medellin can be difficult, especially in the city center. Many areas have limited street parking, and parking lots can be expensive. It's recommended to use public transportation or taxis when possible to avoid the hassle of parking.

4. Driving License

Foreigners can drive in Colombia with an international driving permit for up to 180 days. After that, you will need to obtain a Colombian driving license. To do this, you will need to pass a driving test and provide proof of residency. It's recommended to start this process well before your international permit expires.

5. Road Rules

It's important to familiarize yourself with the local road rules before driving in Medellin. For example, there is a rule called "Pico y Placa" which restricts certain cars from driving during peak hours based on the last digit of their license plate. Also, seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited.

6. Safety Precautions

While Medellin is generally safe, it's important to take precautions when driving. Always lock your doors and keep your windows up, especially at traffic lights. Avoid driving at night if possible, and never leave valuables in your car.

7. Use of GPS

Using a GPS or navigation app can be very helpful when driving in Medellin. However, be aware that these apps may not always be accurate due to the city's complex road system. It's a good idea to have a backup plan in case your GPS leads you astray.
