Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Daegu.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Daegu can be a bit challenging for foreigners due to the different driving culture. Korean drivers are known for their aggressive driving style, frequent lane changes without signaling, and not always following traffic rules. Therefore, it's important to be extra cautious and defensive while driving.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Daegu due to the narrow roads and limited parking spaces. Smaller cars are easier to maneuver and park in tight spaces. Also, consider choosing a car with a built-in GPS system to help navigate the city.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Daegu can be difficult, especially in downtown areas. Most parking spaces are small and tight. Parking fees can also be quite expensive, especially in popular areas. It's advisable to use public transportation when going to crowded areas to avoid parking issues.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Korea with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Korean driver's license. Make sure your IDP is issued by a country that has a mutual recognition agreement with Korea.

5. Obtaining a Korean Driver's License

To get a Korean driver's license, you need to pass a written test, a practical driving test, and a physical examination. The written test is available in multiple languages including English. You can also convert your foreign driver's license to a Korean one if your home country has a license exchange agreement with Korea. You will need to provide necessary documents such as your passport, Alien Registration Card, and your valid foreign driver's license.

6. Familiarize Yourself with Korean Traffic Signs

Before you start driving in Daegu, familiarize yourself with Korean traffic signs and rules. Some signs may be different from those in your home country. Understanding these signs will help you navigate the roads safely and legally.

7. Use of Navigation Apps

Using navigation apps like Naver Maps or KakaoMap can be very helpful as they provide real-time traffic updates and accurate directions. They also have English versions which can be very useful for foreigners.
