Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Mokpo.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Mokpo, like many other parts of Korea, can be a bit challenging for foreigners. Korean drivers are known for their aggressive driving style, so it's important to stay alert and cautious at all times. Traffic rules are generally followed, but you may encounter drivers who don't always adhere to them. It's also worth noting that road signs are in both Korean and English, which can be helpful.

2. Recommended Car Type

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Mokpo due to the city's narrow roads and heavy traffic. Smaller cars are easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to travel outside the city frequently, a larger car may be more comfortable.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Mokpo can be difficult, especially in busy areas. Most parking lots are small and spaces are tight. Parking fees vary depending on the location, but they are generally affordable. Some residential areas offer free street parking, but spaces are limited.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Korea with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Korean driver's license. It's important to note that your IDP must be issued by a country that has a mutual agreement with Korea.

5. Obtaining a Korean Driver's License

To get a Korean driver's license, you will need to pass a written test, a practical driving test, and a physical examination. The written test is available in multiple languages, including English. You can take the practical driving test with an English-speaking examiner. If you already have a driver's license from your home country, you may be able to exchange it for a Korean license without taking the tests.

6. Safety First

Always prioritize safety when driving in Mokpo. Wear your seatbelt at all times, don't use your phone while driving, and never drink and drive. Be aware of pedestrians and cyclists, as they are common in the city.

7. Familiarize Yourself with the Roads

Before you start driving in Mokpo, take some time to familiarize yourself with the city's road system. Use a GPS or a navigation app to help you find your way around. It's also a good idea to learn some basic Korean road signs and terms.
