Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Vilnius.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Vilnius, like in many European cities, can be a bit challenging for newcomers. The traffic can be heavy, especially during peak hours, and the drivers can be aggressive. However, once you get used to the driving culture, it becomes manageable. It's important to be patient, alert, and respectful of other road users.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Vilnius due to the narrow streets and limited parking spaces. They are easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to travel outside the city or during winter, a 4x4 might be a better option due to the weather conditions.

3. Parking in Vilnius

Finding a parking spot in Vilnius can be difficult, especially in the city center. Most parking spaces are paid, and the cost varies depending on the location. It's advisable to use public transportation or walk when going to the city center. There are also mobile apps available that can help you find and pay for parking.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Lithuania with an international driving permit (IDP) for up to six months. After that, you will need to obtain a Lithuanian driving license. It's important to have your IDP and your home country's driving license with you at all times when driving.

5. Obtaining a Lithuanian Driving License

To get a Lithuanian driving license, you will need to pass a theory test and a practical driving test. The tests are available in English. You will also need to provide a medical certificate. It's advisable to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the driving rules and conditions in Lithuania.

6. Road Conditions

The roads in Vilnius are generally in good condition. However, they can be slippery during winter, and some streets in the old town are cobblestoned, which can be challenging to drive on. It's important to adjust your driving according to the road conditions.

7. Speed Limits

Speed limits in Lithuania are strictly enforced. The general speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/h, but it can be lower in residential areas and near schools. On highways, the speed limit is usually 90-130 km/h. There are many speed cameras around the city, so it's important to always follow the speed limits.
