Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Haarlem.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Haarlem, like most of the Netherlands, is generally safe and orderly. The roads are well-maintained and the traffic rules are strictly enforced. However, be aware that bicycles are a major mode of transport in the Netherlands, and cyclists often have their own lanes and traffic signals. Always be cautious of cyclists when driving.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Haarlem due to the narrow streets and limited parking spaces. Electric cars are also popular in the Netherlands, with many charging stations available throughout the city.

3. Parking in Haarlem

Finding parking in Haarlem can be challenging, especially in the city center. Most parking spaces are paid, and the cost can add up quickly. Consider using public transportation or cycling for daily commuting and save driving for longer trips.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in the Netherlands with an international driving license for up to 185 days. After this period, you will need to obtain a Dutch driving license.

5. Obtaining a Dutch Driving License

If you have a driving license from a country outside the EU/EEA, you will need to take a theory and practical driving test to get a Dutch driving license. You can take these tests in English. If your license is from an EU/EEA country, you can exchange it for a Dutch license without taking a test.

6. Be Aware of Speed Limits

The general speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/h, while on highways it's usually 130 km/h. However, these limits can vary, so always pay attention to road signs. Speeding fines in the Netherlands can be quite high.

7. Use of Navigation Systems

Using a navigation system can be very helpful when driving in Haarlem, especially if you're not familiar with the city. Most systems will also alert you to speed cameras and traffic jams.

8. Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Regular vehicle maintenance is important in the Netherlands. The country has a mandatory periodic vehicle inspection (APK) to ensure that all vehicles on the road are safe and environmentally friendly.
