Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Lahore.

1. Understanding the Traffic Culture

Driving in Lahore can be a challenging experience for expats. The traffic is often heavy and chaotic, with a mix of cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, and pedestrians all sharing the road. The driving style can be aggressive and unpredictable, with drivers often ignoring traffic rules and signals. It's important to stay alert and patient while driving.

2. Choosing the Right Vehicle

Smaller cars are recommended for driving in Lahore due to the heavy traffic and narrow streets. A compact car is easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to travel outside the city, an SUV might be a better choice for dealing with rougher terrains.

3. Parking in Lahore

Finding parking in Lahore can be difficult, especially in crowded areas. Some areas have designated parking lots, but they can fill up quickly. Street parking is common, but it's important to park in a way that doesn't obstruct traffic. Parking fees are generally not expensive, but it varies depending on the location.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Pakistan with an international driving permit (IDP) for up to a year. After that, you will need to obtain a local driving license. It's important to always carry your IDP and passport while driving.

5. Obtaining a Local Driving License

To get a local driving license in Lahore, you need to apply at the local traffic police office. The process involves a written test, a driving test, and a medical check-up. You will also need to provide certain documents, such as your passport, visa, and residence permit. It's recommended to get help from a local or a professional agency to navigate the process.

6. Hiring a Local Driver

Given the challenging driving conditions, many expats choose to hire a local driver. This can be a more stress-free and safer option. Local drivers are familiar with the traffic rules (or lack thereof) and can navigate the city's chaotic traffic more efficiently.

7. Road Safety

Road safety is a major concern in Lahore. Accidents are common due to the heavy traffic and disregard for traffic rules. It's important to drive defensively, always wear your seatbelt, and avoid driving at night if possible. Also, be aware that traffic police often set up checkpoints to check for drunk driving and other violations.
