Tips for Expats Driving in Seattle

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Seattle.

1. Understanding Seattle Traffic

Seattle is known for its heavy traffic, especially during rush hours. The city's layout, with its many bodies of water and bridges, can make navigation tricky. It's recommended to use a GPS or a navigation app like Google Maps or Waze to help you find the best routes. Also, be prepared for frequent rain, which can make the roads slick and reduce visibility.

2. Choosing the Right Car

There's no specific type of car recommended for Seattle. However, considering the city's hilly terrain and frequent rain, a car with good handling and traction would be beneficial. If you plan to explore the surrounding mountains and parks, an all-wheel-drive vehicle could be a good choice.

3. Parking in Seattle

Finding parking in downtown Seattle can be challenging, especially during peak hours. Many people rely on parking garages, which can be expensive. Street parking is available but often limited to 2 hours. Some residential areas require a permit for street parking. It's advisable to use public transportation or ride-sharing services when possible.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Washington State with a valid foreign driver's license for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Washington State driver's license. It's recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your foreign license, as the IDP provides a translation of your license.

5. Obtaining a Washington State Driver's License

To get a Washington State driver's license, you will need to pass a knowledge test, a vision screening, and a driving test. You will also need to provide proof of identity, proof of Washington State residence, and your Social Security number. If you have a license from another country, you may be able to waive the driving test. More information can be found on the Washington State Department of Licensing website.

6. Be Aware of Cyclists and Pedestrians

Seattle is a very pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city. Always be aware of your surroundings and yield to pedestrians and cyclists when necessary. Remember that it's illegal to drive or park in bike lanes.

7. Familiarize Yourself with Local Driving Laws

Washington State has some unique driving laws. For example, it's illegal to use a handheld device while driving, even when stopped at a red light. Also, you must keep right except to pass on multi-lane roads. Familiarize yourself with these laws to avoid fines and stay safe on the road.
