Summary: Advice for people moving to Escazu or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Escazu or thinking about moving there.

Living in Escazu as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting and enriching experience. This upscale suburb of San Jose offers a unique blend of modern amenities and traditional Costa Rican culture. However, like any new place, it can take some time to adjust and find your footing. Here are seven key tips to help you make the most of your time in Escazu.

1. Understand the Neighborhoods

Escazu is divided into three main neighborhoods: San Rafael, San Antonio, and Escazu Centro. Each has its own unique charm and appeal. San Rafael is the most modern and developed, with high-end shopping centers, restaurants, and luxury homes. San Antonio, on the other hand, is more rural and traditional, offering stunning views of the city and valley below. Escazu Centro is the historic heart of the town, with colonial architecture and a quaint central park. Understanding these neighborhoods can help you choose the best place to live and spend your time.

2. Embrace the Local Cuisine

Costa Rica is known for its delicious and diverse cuisine, and Escazu is no exception. There are numerous local restaurants where you can try traditional dishes like gallo pinto, casado, and ceviche. Some popular spots include La Posada de las Brujas, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Costa Rican dishes, and Saga Restaurant, a high-end spot offering a fusion of international and Costa Rican cuisine. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new!

3. Learn Spanish

While many people in Escazu speak English, especially in the service industry, learning Spanish will greatly enhance your experience. Not only will it make daily tasks easier, but it will also allow you to connect more deeply with the local culture and people. There are numerous language schools and tutors in the area, so find one that suits your learning style and schedule.

4. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new place is to get involved in the community. This could mean joining a local club, attending community events, or volunteering. While we won't list specific organizations here, we encourage you to research groups that align with your interests. This is a great way to meet locals and other expats, and to feel more connected to your new home.

5. Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Costa Rica is famous for its stunning natural beauty, and Escazu is no exception. The town is nestled in the mountains, offering plenty of opportunities for hiking and bird watching. The nearby Pico Blanco, also known as the "White Peak," is a popular hiking destination. Additionally, the La Sabana Metropolitan Park, located just a short drive away in San Jose, is a great place for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.

6. Understand the Cost of Living

Escazu is one of the more expensive areas in Costa Rica, particularly in the San Rafael neighborhood. However, the cost of living is still generally lower than in many U.S. or European cities. Be sure to budget accordingly, taking into account expenses like rent, food, transportation, and entertainment. It's also worth noting that healthcare in Costa Rica is high quality and affordable compared to many other countries.

7. Stay Safe

While Escazu is generally safe, like any city, it's important to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid displaying expensive items like jewelry or electronics. It's also a good idea to have a basic understanding of local laws and customs. Remember, the goal is to enjoy your time in Escazu, not to spend it worrying about safety.

Living in Escazu, Costa Rica, offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a vibrant and welcoming culture. By understanding the neighborhoods, embracing the local cuisine, learning Spanish, getting involved in the community, enjoying the great outdoors, understanding the cost of living, and staying safe, you can make the most of your time in this beautiful town.
