This is a must read if you're moving to Liguria or thinking about moving there.

Living as an expat or digital nomad in Liguria, can be an exciting and enriching experience. This beautiful region, known for its picturesque coastline and charming towns, offers a unique blend of Italian culture, history, and lifestyle. Here are seven key tips to help you make the most of your time in Liguria.

1. Learn the Language

While many Italians speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning Italian can greatly enhance your experience. Not only will it make daily tasks easier, but it will also allow you to connect more deeply with the local culture and people. Consider taking a language course or using language learning apps to get started.

2. Explore the Local Cuisine

Liguria is famous for its delicious cuisine, particularly its seafood and pasta dishes. Make sure to try local specialties like pesto Genovese, focaccia, and farinata. There are many excellent restaurants in the region where you can sample these dishes, such as Trattoria da Maria in Genoa, Ristorante Belforte in Vernazza, and Osteria da U' Ballestrin in Portofino.

3. Get to Know the Neighborhoods

Liguria is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm. In Genoa, the region's capital, you'll find the historic center with its narrow alleyways and beautiful palaces. The seaside town of Portofino is known for its colorful houses and luxury yachts, while the Cinque Terre area is famous for its five picturesque villages perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Spend time exploring these neighborhoods to get a feel for the local lifestyle and culture.

4. Embrace the Outdoor Lifestyle

Liguria's stunning natural beauty makes it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The region is home to several national parks, including the Cinque Terre National Park and the Portofino Natural Park, where you can enjoy hiking, biking, and bird watching. The Ligurian Sea also offers opportunities for swimming, sailing, and scuba diving.

5. Understand the Local Customs

Italians are known for their warm hospitality and love of life, but they also have certain customs and etiquette rules that may be unfamiliar to foreigners. For example, Italians typically eat dinner late, often not until 8 or 9 pm, and it's common to greet friends and acquaintances with a kiss on both cheeks. Take the time to learn about these customs to avoid any cultural faux pas and to better integrate into the local community.

6. Take Advantage of the Region's Location

Liguria's location in the northwestern part of Italy makes it an ideal base for exploring other parts of the country and even neighboring countries. The region is well connected by train and highway to major cities like Milan, Turin, and Nice in France. Consider taking weekend trips to these and other nearby destinations to broaden your experience.

7. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new place is to get involved in the local community. This could mean joining a local club or organization, participating in community events, or volunteering your time to a cause you care about. Research groups and activities that align with your interests and get involved. This will not only help you make new friends and connections, but also deepen your understanding and appreciation of the local culture.

Living in Liguria, Italy, as an expat or digital nomad can be a truly rewarding experience. By following these tips, you can immerse yourself in the local culture, make the most of the region's natural beauty, and create lasting memories of your time in this beautiful part of Italy.
