Living in Split - 7 Tips for Living in Split

This is a must read if you're moving to Split or thinking about moving there.

Split, is a vibrant city that offers a unique blend of ancient history, stunning architecture, and a laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle. It's a popular destination for expats and digital nomads, thanks to its affordable cost of living, friendly locals, and stunning natural beauty. If you're considering making the move, here are seven key tips to help you settle in and make the most of your time in Split.

1. Learn the Language

While many Croatians speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning some Croatian will make your life easier and help you integrate into the local community. It's also a sign of respect and will be appreciated by the locals. There are plenty of language schools in Split, such as the Split Language School, where you can take classes or arrange for private tuition.

2. Explore the Neighborhoods

Split is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm. The Old Town, or Diocletian's Palace, is the historical heart of the city, filled with ancient Roman buildings and narrow, winding streets. Meanwhile, the Marjan neighborhood is known for its lush hillside park and stunning views over the city and sea. Varoš is a quaint and quiet neighborhood, with traditional stone houses and narrow alleyways. Spend time exploring each one to find your favorite.

3. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Split is a food lover's paradise, with a wide range of restaurants serving up delicious local and international cuisine. For traditional Dalmatian dishes, try Konoba Hvaranin or Konoba Matejuška. If you're a seafood lover, don't miss the fresh fish and shellfish at Nostromo. For a more upscale dining experience, Restaurant Zrno Soli offers gourmet dishes with a stunning view of the marina.

4. Embrace the Outdoor Lifestyle

Split is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, which means plenty of sunshine and warm weather. Take advantage of this by embracing the outdoor lifestyle. The Marjan Forest Park is a popular spot for hiking and cycling, while the city's beaches, such as Ba?vice Beach and Bene Beach, are perfect for swimming and sunbathing. You can also take a boat trip to the nearby islands of Hvar, Bra?, and Vis.

5. Understand the Local Culture

Croatians are generally friendly and welcoming, but they also appreciate good manners and respect for their culture. Be sure to greet people with a friendly "Dobar dan" (Good day) and always say "Hvala" (Thank you) when someone helps you. Also, keep in mind that Croatians are quite relaxed about time, so don't be surprised if things don't always run exactly to schedule.

6. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new city is to get involved in the local community. This could be through joining a club or group, attending local events, or volunteering. Do some research to find opportunities that align with your interests and will help you meet locals and other expats.

7. Plan for the Cost of Living

While Split is more affordable than many European cities, it's still important to plan for the cost of living. Rent can vary greatly depending on the area and type of property, and while eating out is relatively cheap, groceries can be more expensive than you might expect. Be sure to budget for these expenses, as well as for health insurance, transportation, and leisure activities.

Living in Split, Croatia, offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a rich and vibrant culture, enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, and explore some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. With these tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared to make the most of your time in this incredible city.
