Living in Copenhagen - 7 Tips for Living in Copenhagen

This is a must read if you're moving to Copenhagen or thinking about moving there.

Living in Copenhagen as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting adventure. The city is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and friendly locals. However, it can also be a bit overwhelming if you're not prepared. Here are seven key tips to help you navigate your new life in Copenhagen.

1. Learn the Language

While most Danes speak English, learning Danish can make your life easier and help you integrate into the local culture. There are many language schools in Copenhagen, such as Studieskolen and CLAVIS, where you can take Danish classes. Even learning a few basic phrases can go a long way in making you feel more at home.

2. Get a Bike

Copenhagen is known as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Biking is not only a great way to get around the city, but it's also a part of Danish culture. There are numerous bike shops where you can buy or rent a bike, such as Baisikeli or Copenhagen Bicycles. Remember to always follow the local biking rules to stay safe.

3. Explore the Neighborhoods

Copenhagen is made up of diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm. Nørrebro is known for its multicultural vibe and vintage shops, while Vesterbro is famous for its trendy bars and restaurants. Østerbro is a family-friendly neighborhood with beautiful parks, and Frederiksberg is known for its elegant buildings and high-end shopping. Spend time exploring each neighborhood to find your favorite.

4. Try the Local Cuisine

Denmark is known for its delicious food, and Copenhagen is no exception. Be sure to try traditional Danish dishes like smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches) and frikadeller (meatballs). There are many great restaurants in Copenhagen where you can try these dishes, such as Restaurant Schønnemann, Aamanns 1921, and Fiskebaren.

5. Enjoy the Green Spaces

Copenhagen is home to many beautiful parks and green spaces. The King's Garden, located in the heart of the city, is the oldest and most visited park in Copenhagen. Frederiksberg Gardens is another beautiful park, known for its romantic landscape and historic buildings. These parks are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic on a sunny day.

6. Visit the Museums

Copenhagen has a rich history and culture, and one of the best ways to learn about it is by visiting the city's museums. The National Museum of Denmark offers a comprehensive overview of Danish history, while the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art showcases contemporary art in a stunning seaside setting. Don't miss the Designmuseum Denmark, which celebrates Danish design.

7. Get Involved

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new city is to get involved in the local community. There are many opportunities to volunteer in Copenhagen, depending on your interests. Research local groups and organizations to find a cause that you're passionate about. Volunteering can be a great way to meet locals and make a positive impact on your new community.

Living in Copenhagen as an expat or digital nomad can be a rewarding experience. By following these tips, you can make the most of your time in this beautiful city. Whether you're biking through the streets, trying new foods, or volunteering in the community, there's always something new to discover in Copenhagen.
