Summary: Advice for people moving to Almaty or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Almaty or thinking about moving there.

Living in Almaty as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting adventure. This vibrant city, nestled in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, offers a unique blend of modern urban life and traditional Kazakh culture. Here are seven key tips to help you make the most of your time in Almaty.

1. Learn the Language

While English is spoken in many parts of Almaty, particularly in the business and tourism sectors, learning some Kazakh or Russian can greatly enhance your experience. Not only will it make everyday tasks like shopping and dining out easier, but it will also open doors to deeper cultural understanding and friendships. There are several language schools in the city that offer courses for beginners.

2. Explore the Neighborhoods

Almaty is a city of diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. The city center, known as Medeu District, is a bustling hub of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. For a quieter, more residential feel, head to the Almaly District. If you're looking for green spaces and stunning mountain views, the Kok-Tobe neighborhood is a great choice. Spend some time exploring different areas to find the one that feels like home to you.

3. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Kazakh cuisine is a delicious blend of meat, dairy products, and grains, with influences from Russia, China, and other Central Asian countries. Be sure to try traditional dishes like beshbarmak (boiled meat with noodles) and kuyrdak (a stew made from various organ meats). Almaty is also home to a number of excellent restaurants. For a taste of upscale Kazakh cuisine, visit Gosti, located on Dostyk Avenue. For a more casual dining experience, try the popular local chain, Rumi.

4. Take Advantage of Outdoor Activities

With its proximity to the mountains, Almaty offers a wealth of outdoor activities. In the warmer months, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are popular activities. In the winter, the nearby Shymbulak Ski Resort is a favorite destination for skiing and snowboarding. The city also has numerous parks, including the beautiful Panfilov Park, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll or picnic.

5. Get to Know the Local Culture

Immersing yourself in the local culture is one of the best ways to feel at home in a new city. Visit the Central State Museum to learn about Kazakhstan's history and culture. Attend performances at the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Participate in local festivals and holidays, such as Nauryz, the Kazakh New Year. The more you engage with the local culture, the more rewarding your experience in Almaty will be.

6. Stay Connected

As a digital nomad, staying connected is crucial. Fortunately, Almaty has a strong infrastructure for digital connectivity, with widespread Wi-Fi access and several providers offering high-speed internet services. There are also numerous co-working spaces in the city, such as SmArt.Point and Multispace, which offer not only reliable internet but also opportunities to network with other digital nomads and entrepreneurs.

7. Be Open and Respectful

Finally, the most important tip for living in Almaty, or any foreign city, is to be open and respectful. Kazakh people are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and showing respect for their customs and traditions will go a long way in building relationships. Remember that you are a guest in their country, and strive to be a good ambassador for your own.

Living in Almaty can be a rich and rewarding experience. By following these tips, you can make the most of your time in this vibrant, diverse city.
