Summary: Advice for people moving to Kampala or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Kampala or thinking about moving there.

As an expat or digital nomad, living in a new city can be an exciting adventure. Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, is a vibrant and bustling city that offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition. Here are seven key tips to help you navigate and enjoy your time in Kampala.

1. Understand the Local Culture

Ugandans are known for their warmth and hospitality. However, it's important to understand and respect the local culture. Learn a few phrases in Luganda, the most widely spoken local language, to help you connect with the locals. Also, remember to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas.

2. Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

Kampala is divided into five divisions, each with its unique charm. Central Kampala is the commercial and administrative heart of the city, while Nakawa is known for its markets and shopping centers. Makindye and Rubaga are residential areas with a mix of modern and traditional homes. Kawempe is the most populated and offers a more authentic Ugandan experience. Choose a neighborhood that suits your lifestyle and work needs.

3. Explore the Local Cuisine

Ugandan cuisine is a blend of local and international influences. Try local dishes like matooke (steamed bananas), luwombo (meat stew), and rolex (a rolled chapati filled with eggs and vegetables). There are numerous restaurants in Kampala that offer a variety of cuisines. Some popular ones include The Lawns, which offers a mix of African and international dishes, and Khana Khazana, known for its Indian cuisine.

4. Stay Connected

Internet connectivity is essential for digital nomads. While Kampala has a good internet infrastructure, it's advisable to have a backup plan. Consider getting a local SIM card from providers like MTN or Airtel for data services. Also, many cafes and restaurants offer free Wi-Fi, so you can work while enjoying a cup of Ugandan coffee.

5. Get Around Safely

Public transportation in Kampala includes taxis, boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis), and matatus (minibuses). While these are affordable options, they can be crowded and chaotic. For safety and convenience, consider using ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt. Also, remember that traffic in Kampala can be heavy, especially during peak hours, so plan your travel accordingly.

6. Enjoy the Local Attractions

Kampala is home to several attractions that offer insights into Uganda's history and culture. Visit the Uganda Museum, the oldest museum in East Africa, to learn about the country's heritage. Take a stroll in the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Entebbe, or explore the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don't miss the chance to see the stunning views of the city from the top of the Gaddafi National Mosque.

7. Get Involved

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new city is to get involved in the community. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer in Kampala, depending on your interests. Whether it's teaching, healthcare, or environmental conservation, your skills and time can make a difference. Research and reach out to organizations that align with your interests and values.

Living in Kampala as an expat or digital nomad can be a rewarding experience. With its vibrant culture, friendly people, and diverse opportunities, the city has much to offer. By understanding the local culture, choosing the right accommodation, exploring the local cuisine, staying connected, getting around safely, enjoying the local attractions, and getting involved in the community, you can make the most of your time in Kampala.
