There are several ways to find rental properties in India. Online property portals like 99acres, MagicBricks, and Housing.com are popular platforms that list properties from all over the country. Local newspapers also have real estate sections with rental listings. Hiring a real estate agent can also be beneficial as they have extensive knowledge of the local market and can help negotiate rental terms.

Does India Have an MLS Type System?

India does not have a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system like in the United States. However, online property portals and real estate agents provide similar services, offering a wide range of listings and information about available properties.

Do Brokers Have Licenses and How Do I Know if They Are Licensed?

Yes, real estate brokers in India are required to have a license. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 mandates that all real estate agents register with the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA). You can verify a broker's license by checking their RERA registration number on the RERA website.

Should I Buy or Rent?

Expats Talk about What Type of Housing They Live In

"We live in a 3 bed apartment with a roof terrace. There is a variety of housing available including bungalows and townhouse type homes. Most expats will live in apartments," said one expat living in Pune.

"We live in an apartment that is part of an older house. Many expats in the area seem to do something similar, renting from locals or residing in guesthouses, long term," wrote a member in Mussoorie.

Expats Talk about How they Found their Home

"We actually paid someone before we came to set up our home. But, in my husband's business that is something that we do. Locate and set up housing for foreigners in India. So, we base it on location to malls, stores, and other places we find expats like to frequent. We also, consider the place of employment along with cost," commented an expat living in Ahmedabad, India.

"This is our second move in India. We used to live up north, but some friends of ours told us about this place and now we are here volunteering at a school," said an expat in Khunti.

"We had the services of a relocation firm who lined up a lot of places to look at. We didn't plan it, but we lucked out as unlike a lot of the usual expat colonies in Pune, once our driver has gone for the day we aren't confined at home or relying on autorickshaws. It is a short stroll to some very good restaurants, and a couple of blocks to the local supermarket and plenty of other stores whilst still being a quiet neighborhood," remarked one expat who made the move to Pune.

"We had a residence provided for us, however there are *lots* of real estate agents in town," explained one expat living in Mussoorie.

"We have lived in Vasant Vihar in SW of the city. We have followed other expatriate colleagues. We have also looked around to see differences between diff zones first," said one expat in New Delhi.
