Summary: If you're a newcomer in Bangladesh and enrolling your children in school in Bangladesh, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Bangladesh as an expat can be a complex process, especially if you are unfamiliar with the local education system and language. It requires careful planning, preparation, and understanding of the necessary paperwork and procedures. You will need to have certain documents ready, such as your child's birth certificate, passport, previous school records, and immunization records. It's also important to understand that the academic year in Bangladesh starts in January and ends in December, so timing your application is crucial. This guide will help you navigate through the process and ensure a smooth transition for your child into the Bangladeshi public school system.

  1. Research Schools: Start by researching the public schools in your area. Consider factors such as the curriculum, school facilities, teaching staff, and proximity to your home. You can find information online or by contacting the local education authority.
  2. Visit Schools: Once you have shortlisted a few schools, arrange for a visit. This will give you a better understanding of the school environment and teaching methods. It's also a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
  3. Prepare Documents: Gather all the necessary documents. This typically includes your child's birth certificate, passport, previous school records, and immunization records. If these documents are not in Bengali, you may need to get them translated and notarized.
  4. Application Form: Obtain the application form from the school. Some schools may have the form available online. Fill out the form accurately and completely. Make sure to include any additional information that may support your child's application, such as achievements in academics, sports, or other extracurricular activities.
  5. Submit Application: Submit the completed application form along with the required documents to the school. Keep in mind that there may be an application fee. Also, ensure to submit the application before the deadline.
  6. Admission Test/Interview: Most public schools in Bangladesh conduct an admission test or interview. Prepare your child for this. The test usually assesses basic literacy and numeracy skills. The interview is often a casual conversation to understand the child's personality and interests.
  7. Acceptance: If your child passes the admission test/interview, you will receive an acceptance letter from the school. This letter will contain information about the next steps, such as payment of fees and purchase of uniforms and textbooks.
  8. Enrollment: Finally, confirm your child's enrollment by paying the necessary fees. Attend any orientation sessions the school may offer to familiarize yourself and your child with the school environment, rules, and regulations.
