Education in Bulgaria - How to Enroll Your Children in School in Bulgaria

Enrolling your child in a public school in Bulgaria as an expat can be a complex process, especially if you are unfamiliar with the country's education system and language. It requires careful preparation and submission of several documents, including your child's birth certificate, proof of residence, and health records. Understanding the process and knowing what to expect can make the transition smoother for both you and your child. This guide will walk you through the steps to enroll your child in a Bulgarian public school.

  1. Research Schools: Start by researching the public schools in your area. Consider factors such as the school's curriculum, language of instruction, and proximity to your home. Some schools may offer bilingual programs or additional support for non-Bulgarian speaking students.
  2. Prepare Documents: Gather all necessary documents. This typically includes your child's birth certificate, proof of residence (such as a utility bill or lease agreement), and health records. If these documents are not in Bulgarian, you may need to have them translated and notarized.
  3. Application: Visit the school you have chosen to pick up an application form. Some schools may also offer the option to download the form from their website. Fill out the application form in Bulgarian. If you need assistance, consider hiring a translator or asking a Bulgarian-speaking friend for help.
  4. Submission: Submit the completed application form along with all required documents to the school. It's recommended to do this in person so you can ask any questions and ensure that all information is correctly received.
  5. Interview: Some schools may require an interview or assessment for your child. This is to evaluate their academic level and language proficiency. Prepare your child for this to reduce any potential stress or anxiety.
  6. Confirmation: Once your application has been reviewed and accepted, the school will provide a confirmation. This may take a few weeks, so be patient. If your application is not accepted, don't be discouraged. Ask for feedback and consider applying to other schools.
  7. Orientation: After receiving confirmation, attend any orientation sessions offered by the school. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to familiarize yourselves with the school environment, meet teachers, and ask any remaining questions.
  8. First Day of School: Prepare your child for their first day of school. Make sure they know their schedule, where their classes are, and who to ask for help if needed. Encourage them to be open-minded and positive about this new experience.
