Summary: If you're a newcomer in Germany and enrolling your children in school in Germany, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Germany as an expat can be a complex process, especially if you are unfamiliar with the German education system and language. It requires careful planning, preparation, and understanding of the necessary paperwork and procedures. You will need to have certain documents ready, such as your child's birth certificate, proof of residence, and health insurance details. Additionally, you may need to provide proof of your child's previous education, especially if they are transferring from a school in another country. This guide will help you navigate through the process and ensure a smooth transition for your child into the German public school system.

  1. Research and Understand the German Education System: Before you start the enrollment process, it's important to understand the structure of the German education system. Children start with Kindergarten at age 3-6, then Grundschule (primary school) from age 6-10, followed by one of the three types of secondary schools based on their academic ability.
  2. Find a Suitable School: Depending on where you live, you may not have a choice of which public school your child can attend. In Germany, children usually go to their local neighborhood school. However, you can request a different school if you have a valid reason.
  3. Prepare the Necessary Documents: You will need your child's birth certificate, proof of residence (rental contract or utility bill), health insurance details, and possibly proof of your child's previous education. All documents not in German should be translated by a certified translator.
  4. Register at the Local Residents' Registration Office: Before you can enroll your child in a school, you need to register your family at the local residents' registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt). They will provide you with a confirmation of registration (Anmeldebestätigung), which you will need for the school enrollment.
  5. Visit the School: Once you have all the necessary documents, visit the school to enroll your child. It's advisable to make an appointment in advance. During the visit, you will fill out an application form and submit the required documents.
  6. Attend a Meeting with the School: After the application is submitted, you will have a meeting with the school. This is an opportunity for the school to get to know your child and for you to ask any questions. If your child is transferring from a school in another country, they may need to take a placement test.
  7. Receive Confirmation: Once the school has processed your application, you will receive a confirmation of enrollment. This will include details about the start date, school hours, and any necessary school supplies.
