Summary: If you're a newcomer in Korea and enrolling your children in school in Korea, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Korea as an expat can be a complex process, especially if you are unfamiliar with the Korean education system and language. It requires careful preparation and understanding of the necessary paperwork and procedures. This includes obtaining the right documents such as your child's birth certificate, passport, and Alien Registration Card, as well as understanding the school application process, which can vary depending on the school district. This guide will provide a step-by-step process to help you navigate through the enrollment process in Korean public schools.

  1. Firstly, you need to determine the appropriate school district for your child. This is usually based on your residential address in Korea. You can check this information through the local education office or your local ward office.
  2. Once you have determined the school district, you should prepare the necessary documents. These typically include your child's birth certificate, passport, and Alien Registration Card. Some schools may also require additional documents such as proof of residence, so it's advisable to check with the school or local education office beforehand.
  3. Next, you need to fill out the school application form. This can usually be obtained from the school or local education office. The form will require information about your child such as their name, date of birth, and previous education history. It may also require your personal information such as your name, contact details, and work information.
  4. After filling out the application form, you should submit it along with the necessary documents to the school or local education office. It's advisable to do this in person so that you can ask any questions or clarify any information if necessary.
  5. Once your application has been submitted, you will usually receive a confirmation of receipt. The school or local education office will then review your application. This process can take several weeks, so it's important to submit your application well in advance of the school start date.
  6. After your application has been reviewed, you will be notified of the outcome. If your application is successful, you will receive an acceptance letter from the school. This letter will provide information about the school start date, school hours, and any necessary school supplies or uniforms.
  7. Finally, before your child starts school, you may need to attend a school orientation or meeting. This is a good opportunity to meet the school staff, learn about the school policies and procedures, and ask any questions you may have.
