Summary: If you're a newcomer in Singapore and enrolling your children in school in Singapore, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Singapore as an expat can be a complex process. It requires careful planning, preparation, and understanding of the local education system. You will need to have all the necessary paperwork ready, including your child's birth certificate, passport, and immunization records. Additionally, you will need to understand the phases of the Primary One Registration Exercise, which is the process through which students are admitted into primary schools in Singapore. This guide will walk you through the steps you need to take to successfully enroll your child in a public school in Singapore.

  1. Check Eligibility: Before you can enroll your child in a public school, you need to ensure they are eligible. Children must be of the appropriate age (6 years old by 1st January of the year of admission) and you, as the parent, must hold a valid work pass or permit.
  2. Prepare Necessary Documents: Gather all the necessary documents. This includes your child's birth certificate, passport, immunization records, and your employment pass or work permit. If your child is not a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, you will also need to provide a copy of your child's Dependant's Pass or Immigration Exemption Order.
  3. Understand the Primary One Registration Exercise: The Primary One Registration Exercise is divided into several phases. Singapore citizens and permanent residents are given priority in the earlier phases. Later phases are open to foreign children. Make sure you understand when and how to apply in these phases.
  4. Apply for a School: Once the appropriate phase opens, you can apply for a school. This is done online through the Ministry of Education's website. You will need to provide all the necessary documents and information about your child.
  5. Wait for the Results: After the application period closes, the Ministry of Education will process all applications and allocate places based on availability and priority. You will be notified of the results via post or email.
  6. Complete the Registration: If your child is offered a place, you will need to complete the registration process. This usually involves paying a registration fee and providing any additional documents requested by the school.
  7. Prepare for the Start of School: Once your child is registered, you can start preparing for the start of school. This includes buying uniforms, books, and other necessary items. You should also familiarize yourself with the school's rules and regulations.
