Living in Algeria - Best Places to Visit in Algeria for Christmas Cheer

Welcome to Algeria during the festive season! While Algeria is predominantly Muslim and Christmas is not widely celebrated, expats and digital nomads can still find pockets of holiday cheer throughout the country. From festive markets to decorated streets, here are some places where you can soak up the holiday spirit in December.

Algiers' Didouche Mourad Street

Didouche Mourad Street in the heart of Algiers transforms into a festive hub during the holiday season. Although Christmas is not a traditional holiday in Algeria, the street is adorned with lights and decorations, creating a cheerful atmosphere. Expats and visitors can enjoy the sight of festive storefronts and an occasional Christmas tree, which brings a touch of holiday spirit to the bustling city. While there isn't a traditional holiday market, the cafes and shops along the street offer a warm respite from the winter chill.

We Recommend: Take a stroll down the street in the evening when the lights are aglow for the best experience. Stop by one of the local cafes for a hot beverage and enjoy the ambiance of the season.

Oran's Place du 1er Novembre

In Oran, the Place du 1er Novembre often features holiday decorations around December. The square and surrounding areas are sometimes dotted with festive lights and ornaments, providing a holiday atmosphere that can be enjoyed by all. While the celebrations are subdued compared to other countries, the effort to decorate and spread cheer is palpable and appreciated by the local expat community.

We Recommend: Visit the nearby cafes and patisseries for a taste of local sweets and pastries, which can be especially delightful during the holiday season.

Tlemcen

Tlemcen, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, may not have a Christmas market, but its historical sites are often lit up during the winter months, offering a magical backdrop for evening walks. The city's Andalusian influence is felt in the architecture and music, which can be especially enchanting during this time of year.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to explore the ancient ruins and mosques, which are even more striking when illuminated at night.

Annaba's Cours de la Révolution

Annaba's Cours de la Révolution is another spot where holiday decorations can be found. The area is known for its beautiful French colonial architecture, which serves as a picturesque setting for any festive lights and ornaments that adorn the streets during December.

We Recommend: Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Cours de la Révolution and take in the sights of the historic buildings decked out in holiday decor.

Constantine

Constantine, with its dramatic bridges and stunning topography, may not host a traditional Christmas market, but the city's natural beauty is accentuated in the winter months. The crisp air and potential for snowfall on the surrounding hills can make for a winter wonderland experience.

We Recommend: Visit the iconic suspension bridges for breathtaking views and a serene moment to reflect on the beauty of the season.

Setif's Park Mall

Setif might surprise you with its Park Mall, where the holiday season can bring about a more commercial Christmas atmosphere. The mall often features decorations, and you might even spot a Santa Claus, making it a familiar place for expats to gather and enjoy a semblance of the Christmas spirit.

We Recommend: Take advantage of the shopping opportunities here to pick up gifts for loved ones, and enjoy the festive decorations throughout the mall.

Bejaia

Bejaia, a coastal city with a Mediterranean vibe, sometimes sees its streets lightly decorated during the holiday season. The port area and the French-built downtown can offer a nostalgic feel for those missing traditional Christmas celebrations.

We Recommend: Enjoy a meal at one of the seafood restaurants along the coast, where you can savor fresh catches and perhaps find a holiday-themed dish.

Chrea National Park

For those looking to escape the city and enjoy nature, Chrea National Park offers a winter escape where snow is a common sight in December. While not a place for Christmas markets or parades, the snowy landscapes provide a perfect setting for those yearning for a white Christmas atmosphere.

We Recommend: Bring along a sled or rent some skis to make the most of the snow-covered hills and enjoy a day of winter sports amidst the beauty of the Atlas Mountains.

While Algeria may not have a plethora of Christmas markets or events, the country offers unique experiences for those seeking holiday cheer. From the lit-up streets of its major cities to the natural winter wonder of its national parks, there's something for every expat and digital nomad to enjoy during the festive season.
