Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Cambodia for Christmas cheer.

As the holiday season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Cambodia may be seeking that festive cheer they're accustomed to back home. While Cambodia doesn't traditionally celebrate Christmas, the country has embraced the joy and spirit of the season, especially in areas with a high concentration of international residents and tourists. From dazzling decorations to festive markets, here are some places where you can soak up the holiday atmosphere in Cambodia.

Phnom Penh's Riverside

Phnom Penh's Riverside area becomes particularly festive during December. The promenade along the Tonle Sap River is adorned with lights and Christmas decorations. Many of the restaurants and bars in this area go all out with their decor, creating a merry atmosphere. The expat community here is large, and you'll find plenty of holiday events, including Christmas dinners and themed parties. While there isn't a traditional holiday market, the sense of community and festive spirit is palpable.

We Recommend: Take a leisurely evening stroll along the riverside to enjoy the twinkling lights and perhaps stop by one of the many bars or restaurants for a holiday-themed cocktail or a hearty Christmas meal.

Siem Reap's Pub Street

Siem Reap, known for the majestic Angkor Wat, also offers a lively Christmas experience on Pub Street. This area is a hub for tourists and expats, and during December, it transforms with festive lights and decorations. Many establishments will offer holiday specials, and you can expect to hear Christmas music spilling out onto the streets. While there's no official Christmas market, the night markets in Siem Reap often feature holiday-themed souvenirs and gifts.

We Recommend: Enjoy the festive atmosphere with a glass of mulled wine or a seasonal craft beer at one of the many bars and restaurants that line Pub Street.

Phnom Penh's Aeon Mall

For those who crave a more commercial Christmas experience, Phnom Penh's Aeon Mall is the place to be. The mall goes all out with decorations, including a large Christmas tree and festive displays. It's a great place to do some holiday shopping, with a variety of international brands and local shops. The mall often hosts events for children, such as visits from Santa Claus and Christmas-themed activities.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to snap a festive photo with the grand Christmas tree or enjoy some holiday shopping for unique gifts.

Battambang's French Colonial Quarter

Battambang may not be the first place that comes to mind for Christmas spirit, but its charming French Colonial Quarter offers a quaint holiday experience. Some of the local cafes and boutiques decorate their storefronts, and there's a warm, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities. While there's no specific holiday event, the area's unique blend of Cambodian culture and French architecture makes for a picturesque December stroll.

We Recommend: Visit one of the local cafes for a cozy afternoon, enjoying a hot beverage and perhaps a French pastry, as you take in the festive surroundings.

Phnom Penh's BKK1 District

The BKK1 district in Phnom Penh, known for its expat population, lights up during the holiday season. Many of the international restaurants and shops in this area decorate for Christmas, and you can find holiday-themed events, including charity fundraisers and Christmas bazaars. The area is known for its diverse dining options, so you can enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner or opt for something more exotic.

We Recommend: Look out for special holiday menus in the restaurants of BKK1, offering everything from roast turkey to festive vegan options.

Kampot's Riverside

Kampot, a town known for its laid-back vibe and stunning river views, gets into the holiday spirit with its riverside establishments offering festive decorations and events. The expat community here, though smaller, is tight-knit, and you can expect to find holiday gatherings and potlucks. The riverside area, with its colonial architecture, provides a serene backdrop for a quiet Christmas experience.

We Recommend: Join one of the community potluck dinners or enjoy a Christmas special at a riverside restaurant, often featuring fresh, local seafood with a holiday twist.

Phnom Penh's Central Market

While not a traditional Christmas market, Phnom Penh's Central Market (Phsar Thmei) is a must-visit for those looking for holiday gifts and decorations. During December, vendors often stock up on festive items, and you can find everything from Christmas lights to ornaments. The art deco building itself is a sight to behold, and the bustling atmosphere is sure to get you in the shopping spirit.

We Recommend: Explore the market for unique Cambodian crafts and textiles that make perfect Christmas gifts, and don't forget to haggle for the best price!

Sihanoukville's Serendipity Beach

For a tropical Christmas experience, head to Serendipity Beach in Sihanoukville. The beach bars and resorts often host Christmas parties and dinners, complete with festive decorations and beachside barbecues. It's a great place to celebrate the holidays with a mix of locals, expats, and tourists, all enjoying the warm weather and holiday cheer.

We Recommend: Attend a beachfront Christmas party for a unique holiday experience, complete with a barbecue under the stars and the sound of waves in the background.
