Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Jordan for Christmas cheer.

As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Jordan may be seeking places to soak up the holiday spirit. While Jordan may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of Christmas, there are several spots where the festive cheer is alive and well. From bustling holiday markets to beautifully decorated neighborhoods, here are some of the best places to visit in December for a taste of Christmas in Jordan.

Amman's Rainbow Street

Rainbow Street in Amman becomes a hub of festive activity during December. The street, known for its bohemian vibe and historic significance, is adorned with Christmas lights and decorations. Cafes and shops along the street often have special holiday-themed displays and menus. While there isn't a traditional Christmas market, the atmosphere is jovial, and the local businesses sometimes host holiday events and sales. The area is particularly lively in the evenings when locals and visitors alike stroll the street, enjoying the festive ambiance.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try some seasonal treats at the local cafes, such as warm sahlab (a sweet milky drink) topped with cinnamon, which is especially popular during the colder months.

Madaba

Madaba, known as the "City of Mosaics," offers a unique Christmas experience with its historical and religious significance. The city's Christian community celebrates the holiday with enthusiasm, and visitors can enjoy the sight of Christmas decorations and lights adorning the streets. The Church of Saint George, famous for its ancient mosaic map, often holds special services during the holiday season. While there isn't a specific holiday market, the local shops and artisans may offer Christmas-themed crafts and souvenirs.

We Recommend: Be sure to visit the local churches during this time, as they often have beautiful nativity scenes and choirs singing traditional Christmas carols.

Fuhais

Fuhais, a predominantly Christian town near Amman, is known for its spirited Christmas celebrations. The town usually hosts a Christmas festival, which includes a market selling handmade crafts, local foods, and Christmas decorations. The festival often features live music, dance performances, and activities for children. The exact dates of the festival vary, but it typically takes place in mid-December.

We Recommend: Look out for the unique Christmas ornaments made by local artisans, which make for wonderful souvenirs or gifts.

Abdoun in Amman

Abdoun, one of Amman's upscale neighborhoods, is where you can find some of the city's most elaborate Christmas decorations. The area's high-end shops and malls go all out with festive displays, and many restaurants offer special holiday menus. Abdoun Circle, in particular, becomes a focal point for Christmas lights and decorations, creating a magical atmosphere for evening walks.

We Recommend: Enjoy a festive dinner at one of Abdoun's gourmet restaurants, where you can often find traditional Christmas dishes with a Jordanian twist.

Mecca Mall in Amman

Mecca Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in Amman and transforms into a winter wonderland during the Christmas season. The mall features a large Christmas tree, festive decorations, and sometimes even a Santa Claus for children to meet. It's a great place to do some holiday shopping, with many stores offering seasonal sales and promotions.

We Recommend: Take a break from shopping to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or coffee at one of the mall's cafes, surrounded by the festive decor.

Aqaba

Aqaba, Jordan's only coastal city, might seem like an unconventional place to celebrate Christmas, but its warm weather and relaxed atmosphere make it an appealing December getaway. The city's hotels and resorts often decorate for the holidays and host special events, including Christmas dinners and parties. The Aqaba Christmas Festival is a highlight, featuring a market, live entertainment, and activities for families.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to go diving or snorkeling in the Red Sea, where the water is still warm enough to enjoy even in December.

Christmas at the Boulevard in Amman

The Boulevard, located in the Abdali area of Amman, is a modern open-air shopping district that goes all out for Christmas. The area is beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments, and there's often a large Christmas tree that serves as a perfect backdrop for holiday photos. The Boulevard hosts a Christmas market where visitors can shop for gifts, decorations, and indulge in festive foods and drinks.

We Recommend: Try the roasted chestnuts and mulled wine available at the market, which are sure to keep you warm and cozy while you explore.

Christmas at the Opera House in Amman

The Royal Opera House in Amman is a cultural landmark that often hosts special events during the Christmas season, including concerts and ballet performances. Attending a holiday-themed show here can be a delightful way to experience the arts and get into the Christmas spirit. The Opera House itself is usually adorned with elegant decorations, adding to the festive mood.

We Recommend: Keep an eye out for performances of "The Nutcracker" ballet, a Christmas classic that's often part of the Opera House's holiday lineup.

These destinations offer a mix of traditional and modern Christmas experiences, allowing expats and digital nomads in Jordan to celebrate the holiday season with joy and warmth. Whether you're looking for a festive market, a religious service, or just a beautifully decorated neighborhood to explore, Jordan has something to offer for everyone during the holidays.
