As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Kazakhstan may be seeking that special holiday cheer. Despite the chilly temperatures, December in Kazakhstan can be a warm and joyous time, with various cities and towns lighting up with Christmas spirit. From traditional markets to glittering decorations, there's a wealth of places to explore for those looking to embrace the holiday festivities. Here are some of the best spots to visit in Kazakhstan to get into the holiday spirit.

Almaty's Zhibek Zholy Avenue

Almaty, the cultural heart of Kazakhstan, transforms into a winter wonderland in December. Zhibek Zholy Avenue, in particular, is known for its festive atmosphere. The avenue is adorned with twinkling lights and decorations, creating a magical setting for a leisurely stroll. The highlight is the Almaty Christmas Market, where you can find handcrafted gifts, local delicacies, and the scent of spiced mulled wine in the air. The market typically runs throughout December, offering a perfect opportunity to soak in the holiday vibes.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the famous Kazakhstani baursaks, a type of fluffy fried bread, often dusted with powdered sugar, which pairs wonderfully with a warm cup of mulled wine.

Nur-Sultan's Baiterek Tower Area

In the capital city of Nur-Sultan, the area around the iconic Baiterek Tower becomes a hub of holiday celebrations. The tower itself is often lit up with festive lights, and the surrounding public spaces host a variety of seasonal events, including an impressive New Year's Eve fireworks display. The Astana Christmas Festival, usually held in early December, features a range of performances, workshops, and a charming Christmas market with traditional Kazakhstani treats and crafts.

We Recommend: Be sure to sample the indulgent shashu, roasted nuts coated in a sweet glaze, which are a popular snack at the Christmas market.

Shymbulak Ski Resort

For those who love winter sports and mountain scenery, Shymbulak Ski Resort near Almaty is a must-visit destination in December. The resort is not only for skiing and snowboarding but also hosts festive events to celebrate the season. The atmosphere is filled with the joy of the holidays, with snow-covered peaks serving as a stunning backdrop. Visitors can enjoy the crisp mountain air, twinkling lights, and perhaps even a visit from Santa Claus himself.

We Recommend: After hitting the slopes, warm up with a traditional Kazakhstani hot beverage, such as besbarmak tea, known for its hearty flavors and warming spices.

Kok-Tobe Hill in Almaty

Kok-Tobe Hill, with its panoramic views of Almaty, becomes a festive destination during December. The hilltop park is decorated with lights and ornaments, and visitors can enjoy a range of holiday-themed attractions. The cable car ride to the top offers a unique perspective on the city's festive lights. Once at the summit, you can find seasonal entertainment and a small market with local crafts and foods.

We Recommend: Try the hot samsa, savory pastries filled with meat or vegetables, which are a delightful treat on a cold winter's day.

Medeu Ice Skating Rink

Located in the mountains just outside Almaty, the Medeu Ice Skating Rink is an enchanting place to visit during the holiday season. As one of the highest outdoor ice rinks in the world, Medeu offers a truly unique ice-skating experience. During December, the rink often features holiday-themed decorations and music, creating a festive atmosphere for skaters of all levels.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate from one of the rink-side cafes, providing the perfect way to stay warm and energized while skating.

Aktau City Center

Aktau, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea, may not have the snowfall of other Kazakhstani cities, but its city center is no less festive. The main square is usually adorned with a large Christmas tree and illuminated decorations. Seasonal events and fairs offer a chance to experience local holiday traditions and shop for unique gifts.

We Recommend: Look out for the local camel milk delicacies, which are a special treat in this region and offer a taste of traditional Kazakhstani cuisine.

Arbat Pedestrian Street in Almaty

Arbat Pedestrian Street in Almaty is known for its artistic vibe and becomes particularly lively during the holiday season. Street performers, festive decorations, and an array of shops and cafes create a cheerful atmosphere. The holiday spirit is palpable as you wander through the street, with the possibility of stumbling upon impromptu musical performances or holiday-themed art installations.

We Recommend: Enjoy the local street food, such as the grilled shashlik, which is a perfect snack as you take in the sights and sounds of the festive Arbat.

Karaganda Central Park

Karaganda's Central Park is a popular spot for families and friends to gather during December. The park is transformed with festive lights and decorations, and there's often a holiday market where you can find seasonal treats and gifts. The park also hosts various events, including concerts and activities for children, making it a great place to experience the joy of the season.

We Recommend: Be sure to try the gingerbread cookies, often intricately decorated, which are a sweet staple at the holiday market.

Taraz City Center

The ancient city of Taraz comes alive with festive cheer during December. The city center, with its historical monuments, provides a picturesque setting for the holiday festivities. Seasonal decorations light up the streets, and local vendors offer a variety of traditional Kazakhstani goods and foods. The Taraz Christmas Bazaar is a highlight, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and holiday traditions.

We Recommend: Sample the qurt, a traditional dried cheese snack, which is both nutritious and flavorful, and often found at the Christmas Bazaar.
