Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Tanzania for Christmas cheer.

As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Tanzania may be looking for places to soak up the holiday spirit. While traditional Christmas markets and snowy landscapes may not be a staple in this East African nation, there are still plenty of places where the festive cheer is alive and well. From vibrant city celebrations to coastal festivities, here are some of the best places to visit in Tanzania during December to get into the holiday mood.

Stone Town in Zanzibar

Stone Town, the cultural heart of Zanzibar, transforms into a festive wonderland in December. The narrow streets are adorned with colorful decorations, and the air is filled with the scent of spices and the sound of Taarab music. While there isn't a traditional Christmas market, the Forodhani Gardens become even more lively with vendors selling local crafts and delicious Zanzibari cuisine, perfect for those looking to find unique gifts or indulge in festive treats.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try some Zanzibar pizza, a local delicacy, from the food stalls at Forodhani Gardens. It's a unique blend of flavors that you won't find anywhere else.

Arusha City Center

Arusha, known as the gateway to Tanzania's safari destinations, also offers a cheerful holiday atmosphere. The city center is often decorated with festive lights and ornaments. Local churches hold Christmas services and events that are open to the public, offering a blend of international and local Christmas traditions. The Maasai Market is a great place to shop for handcrafted gifts, including jewelry, fabrics, and carvings.

We Recommend: Look out for the intricate beaded jewelry at the Maasai Market, which makes for a beautiful and meaningful Christmas gift.

Dar es Salaam's Slipway Area

The Slipway in Dar es Salaam is a popular spot for both locals and expats, especially during the holiday season. The area is known for its shopping and dining options, with many establishments offering holiday specials. In December, the atmosphere is festive with decorations and lights, and you might even find a Christmas bazaar or a charity event where you can celebrate the season while giving back to the community.

We Recommend: Enjoy a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants in the Slipway area, where you can savor fresh seafood while taking in the ocean view.

Moshi Town

Moshi, situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, provides a unique holiday experience with its clear views of the snow-capped mountain. The town itself gets into the holiday spirit with decorations and lights. Local hotels and lodges often host Christmas events and dinners, offering a cozy atmosphere for those missing the traditional cold-weather Christmas experience.

We Recommend: Take part in a Christmas Eve dinner at one of the lodges, where you can enjoy a festive meal with the backdrop of Africa's highest peak.

Mbezi Beach in Dar es Salaam

Mbezi Beach is a serene suburb of Dar es Salaam known for its beautiful coastline and upscale living. During December, the area lights up with festive decorations, and beach resorts often organize Christmas parties and special events. It's a great place to enjoy a tropical Christmas with a mix of relaxation and celebration.

We Recommend: Attend a beachfront Christmas party at one of the resorts, where you can dance the night away under the stars.

Bagamoyo Historical Town

The historical town of Bagamoyo is a cultural gem during the holiday season. With its rich history and Swahili culture, the town offers a different perspective on Christmas celebrations. While there may not be a specific holiday event, the relaxed atmosphere and warm hospitality make it a charming place to visit in December.

We Recommend: Explore the historical sites of Bagamoyo, such as the Caravan Serai Museum, to learn about the town's past while enjoying the festive season.

Karatu Town

Karatu is a small town located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is a peaceful retreat during the holidays. The town often features modest Christmas decorations and local festivities. It's a great place to enjoy a quiet holiday while being close to some of Tanzania's best wildlife viewing areas.

We Recommend: Book a Christmas Day safari in the nearby Ngorongoro Crater for an unforgettable holiday experience amidst Tanzania's stunning wildlife.

Dodoma City Center

As the capital city of Tanzania, Dodoma takes on a festive air during December. The city center is decorated with lights and Christmas trees, and local choirs perform carols in public spaces. It's a great opportunity to experience Tanzanian Christmas traditions in the heart of the country.

We Recommend: Attend a Christmas carol performance by a local choir to feel the joyous spirit of the season.

Nungwi Village in Zanzibar

Nungwi, located on the northern tip of Zanzibar, is known for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife. During the holiday season, the village becomes even more lively with beach parties and festive events. Many hotels and bars host Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations, making it a perfect spot for those looking to party during the holidays.

We Recommend: Join a beach barbecue on Christmas Day, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and tropical drinks right on the sand.
