Summary: As you plan your move to Israel, a key decision awaits: selecting the right health insurance. Should you go with local or expat coverage? This article explores the options and includes experiences shared by expats in Israel, offering a glimpse into what might work best for you.

Healthcare in Israel - Health Insurance for Expats in Israel

Israel's health insurance system is renowned for its efficiency and quality, offering comprehensive coverage to its residents. Expats and digital nomads considering a move to Israel should familiarize themselves with the local health insurance landscape to ensure they have adequate coverage during their stay.

Health Insurance Companies in Israel

In Israel, the health insurance system is based on a universal coverage model managed by four Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) known as "Kupot Holim": Clalit, Maccabi, Meuhedet, and Leumit. These HMOs provide a basket of health services to all Israeli citizens and permanent residents. Expats with a valid visa and who have completed the necessary residency requirements are also eligible to join one of these HMOs. Each offers a similar basic package as mandated by the government, with the option to purchase supplementary insurance for additional services.

Expat Health Insurance in Israel

While some expats living in Israel opt to join the local HMOs, others may choose specialized expat health insurance plans. These plans can offer broader coverage, including medical treatment in other countries, repatriation services, and customer service in multiple languages, which can be particularly appealing to those who frequently travel or prefer dealing with health matters in their native language.

Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance

Expats and digital nomads in Israel often face the decision of whether to use local health insurance providers or specialized expat health insurance. The choice largely depends on the individual's circumstances, such as the length of their stay, their residency status, and personal preferences. Those who plan to integrate into Israeli society and reside long-term may find it more beneficial to join a local HMO, while those on short-term stays or who prioritize flexibility and international coverage might lean towards expat health insurance.

Considerations for Health Insurance Abroad

When deciding on health insurance while living overseas, expats should consider several factors. One key aspect is the claims process: some insurers offer direct billing with hospitals and clinics, which can be more convenient and reduce out-of-pocket expenses. Others may require the insured to pay upfront and then submit claims for reimbursement, which can involve more paperwork and waiting periods. Additionally, it's important to understand the extent of coverage, including whether pre-existing conditions are covered, the scope of the network of healthcare providers, and the level of customer support available, especially in emergency situations.
