As an expat or digital nomad in Russia, you're in for a unique adventure, especially if you're a fan of winter sports. Russia offers a variety of ski resorts that cater to all levels of skiers and snowboarders, from beginners to experts. The vastness of the country provides an array of terrains and climates, ensuring that every winter enthusiast finds their perfect slope. Here are some of the best ski areas in Russia that you should consider visiting during your stay.

Rosa Khutor

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi
Family Friendly: Yes

Rosa Khutor is arguably the most famous ski resort in Russia, having hosted the alpine skiing events during the 2014 Winter Olympics. The resort offers a wide range of slopes for all skill levels, modern lifts, and a well-developed infrastructure. It's also a great destination for families, with plenty of activities for children and non-skiers alike.

We Recommend: After a day on the slopes, visit the local favorite restaurant "Trikoni Rosa Khutor" for a taste of traditional Caucasian cuisine in a cozy, chalet-style setting.

Sheregesh

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Siberia, Kemerovo region
Family Friendly: Yes

Sheregesh is Siberia's skiing jewel with its long season, often running from November to May. The resort is known for its deep powder snow, which is a dream for freeriders and off-piste enthusiasts. Families will appreciate the variety of gentle slopes and ski schools for beginners.

We Recommend: Check out "Ays" cafe for a warm and hearty meal. Their Siberian pelmeni (dumplings) are a must-try for anyone visiting the area.

Elbrus

Ability Level: Intermediate to expert.
Location: Caucasus Mountains, Kabardino-Balkaria
Family Friendly: No

Mount Elbrus is Europe's highest peak and offers some of the most challenging skiing in Russia. The resort is best suited for experienced skiers looking for adventure. The area is less commercialized, providing a raw and authentic mountain experience, but it may not offer as much for families or beginners.

We Recommend: The "Vysota 5642" restaurant not only offers delicious local cuisine but also boasts breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains from its dining room.

Dombay

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Karachay-Cherkess Republic, North Caucasus
Family Friendly: Yes

Dombay is a picturesque resort nestled in a valley surrounded by the majestic Caucasus Mountains. It's a great destination for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, with a good mix of gentle and challenging slopes. The resort is also family-friendly, offering activities and entertainment for children.

We Recommend: "Alibek" restaurant is a great spot to enjoy local dishes and international cuisine with a stunning view of the mountains.

Bobrovy Log

Bobrovy Log is a part of the Krasnoyarsk Stolby Nature Reserve and offers a family-friendly atmosphere with a variety of slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers. The resort also features a fun park for snowboarders and a tubing park for kids.

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Sochi, Krasnodar Krai
Family Friendly: Yes

Krasnaya Polyana is another Sochi-based resort that gained international fame during the 2014 Winter Olympics. We Recommend: "Red Fox" is a renowned restaurant in Krasnaya Polyana, serving up exquisite dishes with a focus on local ingredients and modern culinary techniques.

Baikalsk

Ability Level: Intermediate to expert.
Location: Siberia, near Lake Baikal

Baikalsk is not as well-known as some other Russian resorts, but it offers some of the most spectacular views overlooking the world's deepest freshwater lake, Lake Baikal.
