Sweden, with its vast landscapes and snowy winters, is a paradise for ski enthusiasts. Expats and digital nomads who have chosen to make Sweden their home, or those considering the move, will be delighted to know that the country boasts some of the best ski areas in Europe. Whether you're a beginner looking to learn, an intermediate skier aiming to improve, or an expert seeking thrilling slopes, Sweden has something for everyone. Here are the 7-10 best ski areas in Sweden that you should definitely check out.

Åre

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Jämtland County in central Sweden.
Family Friendly: Yes

Åre is Sweden's premier ski destination and offers a wide range of slopes for all skill levels. It's not only the largest ski area in the country but also one of the most scenic, with stunning views over Åresjön lake. The village has a charming atmosphere with plenty of après-ski activities and facilities for families, including ski schools and childcare services.

We Recommend: For a unique dining experience, visit Fjällpuben, a cozy restaurant that offers a taste of the local cuisine with a modern twist, all in a traditional Swedish mountain cabin setting.

Sälen

Ability Level: All ability levels.
Location: Dalarna County in central Sweden.
Family Friendly: Yes

Sälen is one of Sweden's most family-friendly ski resorts, with gentle slopes for beginners and plenty of activities for children. The area consists of several ski resorts, including Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, and Hundfjället, each offering a unique experience. Sälen is also known for hosting the start of the famous Vasaloppet cross-country ski race.

We Recommend: Visit the cozy Högvilt restaurant in Ramundberget for a taste of local game and other specialties, complemented by a selection of fine wines.

Riksgränsen

Ability Level: Intermediate to expert.
Location: Norrbotten County in northern Sweden, near the Norwegian border.
Family Friendly: No

Riksgränsen is Sweden's northernmost ski resort and is renowned for its late season, which can extend into June. The resort is a haven for freeriders and those looking for challenging terrain. It's less suited for families due to the advanced nature of the slopes and the remote location.
