Summary: Learn about prescription medications and pharmacies before you need them in Bermuda.

As an expat or digital nomad considering a move to Bermuda, understanding the healthcare landscape, particularly regarding prescription medications, is crucial. Bermuda offers a range of pharmaceutical services, but there are nuances to accessing and affording medication that differ from many other countries.

Pharmacies in Bermuda

In Bermuda, pharmacies are the primary outlets for dispensing prescription medications. They are well-distributed throughout the island, ensuring that residents, including expats and digital nomads, have convenient access to their medications. These pharmacies are typically modern and well-stocked, with pharmacists who are trained to provide professional advice and assistance. Many pharmacies in Bermuda also offer a range of over-the-counter medications, health products, and sometimes even beauty and personal care items.

Prescription Requirements in Bermuda

Prescriptions are indeed necessary for most medications in Bermuda. Expats and digital nomads will need to visit a local doctor to obtain a prescription, which can then be filled at any pharmacy on the island. It's important to note that Bermuda's prescription regulations may differ from those in other countries, so some medications that are available over the counter elsewhere might require a prescription in Bermuda. Additionally, if you are bringing medications with you, it's advisable to have a copy of your prescription and a letter from your doctor to avoid any issues with customs.

Cost of Prescription Medications in Bermuda

Prescription medications in Bermuda can be expensive, especially when compared to prices in countries with subsidized healthcare systems. The cost of living in Bermuda is generally high, and this extends to healthcare products and services. Expats and digital nomads should be prepared for the possibility of higher out-of-pocket costs for their medications. It's a good idea to check if your health insurance plan provides coverage for prescription drugs in Bermuda or to consider purchasing additional insurance to help mitigate these costs.

Other Considerations for Medications in Bermuda

When moving to Bermuda, expats and digital nomads should take into account several other considerations regarding prescription medications. It's wise to bring an adequate supply of any essential medications to cover the initial period after arrival, as it may take time to establish care with a local physician. Also, some specific medications may not be as readily available in Bermuda, so it's important to check the availability of your prescriptions before relocating. Lastly, always ensure that your medications are legal in Bermuda, as some drugs that are permissible in other countries may be controlled or prohibited on the island.

Healthcare Services and Support in Bermuda

Bermuda's healthcare system is equipped to support the needs of its residents, including expats and digital nomads. In addition to pharmacies, there are several hospitals and clinics that provide medical services. For ongoing healthcare needs, it's recommended to register with a local general practitioner who can help manage and prescribe any necessary medications. Expats and digital nomads should also familiarize themselves with Bermuda's emergency services and how to access them should the need arise.

Expats Talk About Prescriptions in Bermuda

"Prescription medicines are covered through your insurance. This is one area which is better than UK as there is no co-pay for common prescription items, compared with the standard prescription charge in UK. Some that are OTC in UK are not available without prescription here - for example oral antifungals. Others surprisingly are available OTC such as some sleeping tablets and strong laxatives. Many vitamins are available in pharmacies," commented one expat living in Hamilton, Bermuda.
