Summary: Learning how to get around using public transportation in Baku is an important step in adjusting to life in Baku. In this article, we cover the local public transportation options.

Public transportation in Baku is diverse and well-developed, offering a variety of options for both locals and expats. The city boasts a comprehensive network of buses, trams, metros, and taxis, all managed by the Baku Transport Agency. The Baku Metro, BakuBus, and the Baku Tram are the primary modes of public transportation, supplemented by a fleet of taxis for more personalized travel. With such a robust public transportation system, it is entirely possible for an expat living in Baku to comfortably live without a car, relying on these systems and walking.

Baku Metro

The Baku Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city and its suburbs. It is safe, efficient, and affordable, making it a popular choice for daily commuting. The metro operates from early morning until midnight, ensuring accessibility throughout the day. It is generally safe at night, with security personnel present at all stations. Women traveling alone and children using the metro to get to school should feel secure. The cost of a single ride is 0.30 AZN (approximately $0.18), making it an economical choice for regular travel. The metro system covers a vast area of the city with three lines and 25 stations, connecting various neighborhoods and points of interest.

BakuBus

BakuBus is the city's primary bus service, offering extensive coverage of Baku and its surrounding areas. The buses are modern, clean, and equipped with air conditioning, making them a comfortable choice for travel. The service operates 24 hours a day, with night buses available for late-night travel. The fare for a single journey is 0.30 AZN, the same as the metro. BakuBus is generally safe, with security measures in place to ensure passenger safety. The extensive network of routes makes it possible to reach almost any part of the city using the bus service.

Baku Tram

The Baku Tram is a relatively new addition to the city's public transportation system, reintroduced in 2015 after a hiatus of several years. The tram service operates on a single line, covering a route of 8.1 kilometers. It is a safe and affordable mode of transport, with a single journey costing 0.20 AZN. The trams are modern and comfortable, offering a scenic and leisurely way to travel around the city. However, the limited coverage of the tram service means it may not be the most practical choice for daily commuting.

Taxis

Taxis are a common sight in Baku, offering a more personalized and flexible mode of transport. They are generally safe and reliable, with many drivers speaking English, making them a convenient choice for expats. The cost of a taxi ride varies depending on the distance traveled, but it is generally affordable. There are also several ride-hailing apps available in Baku, including Uber and Bolt, offering an alternative to traditional taxis.

In conclusion, Baku's public transportation system is comprehensive and efficient, making it entirely feasible for an expat to live in the city without a car. The variety of options available, from the rapid metro to the extensive bus network, ensures that all areas of the city are accessible. The affordability and safety of these services further enhance their appeal, making public transportation a viable and practical choice for travel in Baku.
