Summary: Learning how to get around using public transportation in Chisinau is an important step in adjusting to life in Chisinau. In this article, we cover the local public transportation options.

Chisinau, the capital city of Moldova, offers a variety of public transportation options for its residents and visitors. The city's public transportation system is primarily made up of buses, trolleybuses, and minibuses, also known as "rutieras". These systems are run by the Chisinau City Hall and private companies. For an expat living in Chisinau, it is entirely possible to live comfortably without a car, relying on these public transportation systems and walking. However, understanding the nuances of each system can make the experience more comfortable and efficient.

Buses

The bus system in Chisinau is extensive and covers most areas of the city. It is a reliable and affordable way to get around, with a single journey costing around 2 Moldovan Leu (approximately 0.11 USD). The buses are generally safe to use at any time of the day, although they can get quite crowded during peak hours. Women traveling alone and children using the bus to get to school should not face any significant safety concerns. However, it's worth noting that bus schedules can sometimes be unpredictable, and delays are not uncommon.

Trolleybuses

Trolleybuses are another popular form of public transportation in Chisinau. They are electrically powered and are a more environmentally friendly option compared to regular buses. The trolleybus network is quite extensive and covers a large part of the city. A single journey on a trolleybus costs around 2 Moldovan Leu. Like the buses, trolleybuses are generally safe to use, but can also get crowded during peak hours. The trolleybuses tend to be more reliable in terms of sticking to their schedules compared to buses.

Minibuses (Rutieras)

Minibuses, locally known as "rutieras", are a unique form of public transportation in Chisinau. They are privately operated and cover almost every part of the city. The fare for a single journey is slightly higher than that of buses and trolleybuses, costing around 3 Moldovan Leu. The minibuses can get very crowded, and they don't have specific stops - passengers can request to get off at any point along the route. While they are generally safe to use, the driving style of some minibus drivers can be a bit aggressive, which might be uncomfortable for some passengers.

Taxis

While not technically a form of public transportation, taxis are a commonly used mode of transport in Chisinau. They are relatively affordable, with a short journey typically costing around 30-50 Moldovan Leu. Taxis can be hailed on the street, ordered by phone, or booked through various mobile apps. They are a safe and convenient option, especially for those who prefer a more comfortable and private mode of transportation.

In conclusion, Chisinau's public transportation system is quite comprehensive and affordable, making it possible for expats to live comfortably without a car. However, it's important to be aware of the quirks and characteristics of each system to ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience.
