Summary: Mastering the public transportation system in Muscat is a crucial aspect of adapting to life there. This article provides a detailed overview of the available local transit options.

Public transportation in Muscat, the capital city of Oman, is primarily facilitated by the Mwasalat bus system and a network of taxis. The city does not have a subway or tram system, but the bus network is extensive and covers most areas of the city. Taxis are also readily available and are a popular choice for both locals and expats. While it is possible for an expat to live in Muscat without a car, it may not be as convenient as owning one, especially if one lives in the outskirts of the city or needs to travel frequently for work or other purposes.

Mwasalat Bus System

The Mwasalat bus system is the main form of public transportation in Muscat. It operates a fleet of modern, air-conditioned buses that cover most areas of the city. The buses run on a regular schedule and are generally reliable. The cost of a bus ride is quite affordable, with fares starting at 200 baisa (around 50 cents) for a single journey within the city. The buses are safe to use at any time of the day, and they are also safe for women traveling alone or children going to school. However, the bus system may not be as convenient for those living in the outskirts of the city, as the buses do not cover all areas and the frequency of buses may be lower in these areas.

Taxis

Taxis are another popular form of public transportation in Muscat. They are readily available throughout the city and can be hailed on the street or booked through a taxi booking app. The taxis are metered, and the fare is usually reasonable, although it can be higher during peak hours or for longer journeys. Taxis are generally safe to use, but it is always advisable to use a reputable taxi company or booking app. Women traveling alone may prefer to use a taxi, especially at night, as it provides a more private and secure mode of transportation.

Car Rental

For those who prefer the convenience of driving, car rental is a popular option in Muscat. There are numerous car rental companies in the city, offering a wide range of vehicles to choose from. The cost of renting a car can vary depending on the type of vehicle and the duration of the rental, but it is generally affordable. Driving in Muscat is relatively easy, as the roads are well-maintained and the traffic is not as heavy as in some other major cities. However, it is important to be aware of the local driving rules and regulations, as traffic violations can result in hefty fines.

In conclusion, while it is possible for an expat to live in Muscat without a car, the convenience of having one cannot be underestimated. The public transportation system, while reliable and affordable, may not cover all areas of the city or meet all travel needs. Therefore, depending on one's lifestyle and travel requirements, owning a car or renting one may be a more practical option.
