Moving to <b><a href="https://www.expatexchange.com/countries/35/Cyprus" alt="Cyprus">Cyprus</a></b> with a Pet: A Guide for Expats and Digital Nomads

Moving to Cyprus with a pet involves a series of regulations and requirements to ensure the health and safety of your furry friend. Cyprus is a pet-friendly country, and it is not uncommon to see residents walking their dogs or caring for their cats. However, bringing a pet into the country requires adherence to vaccination and paperwork protocols, and in some cases, your pet may need to undergo quarantine. This article will delve into the specifics of these requirements, including prohibited pets, the process of bringing your pet into Cyprus, and what to do upon arrival to make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your pet.

Can I bring my dog to Cyprus?

Yes, you can bring your dog to Cyprus, but you must comply with the country's import regulations. Dogs must be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, and have a pet passport or third-country official veterinary certificate. Depending on the country you are traveling from, your dog may also need to undergo a blood test to ensure the rabies vaccination is effective and may be subject to quarantine if coming from a high-risk country.

Can I bring my cat to Cyprus?

Similar to dogs, cats are also allowed entry into Cyprus. Cat owners must ensure their pets are microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. A pet passport or an official veterinary certificate is also required. Cats may need to undergo additional tests or quarantine based on the country of origin and its rabies status.

Pets that are Prohibited from Coming into Cyprus

Certain breeds of dogs are prohibited from entering Cyprus, including American Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro. Additionally, any hybrid animals that are a cross between dogs and wolves are not permitted. It's important to check the latest regulations before planning your move, as these restrictions can change and may include other species or breeds.

How do I bring my pet to Cyprus?

To bring your pet to Cyprus, start by ensuring your pet has a microchip that complies with ISO 11784/11785 standards. Next, vaccinate your pet against rabies at least 21 days before travel but not more than one year. Obtain a pet passport or an official veterinary certificate, and if required, have a blood test done 30 days after the rabies vaccination and three months before entering Cyprus. You should also notify the Veterinary Services of Cyprus at least 24 hours before your arrival. Keep in mind that pets may be quarantined if they do not meet all the health requirements or if they come from countries with high rabies risk.

Upon Arriving in Cyprus

After arriving in Cyprus, you may need to register your pet with the local municipality and obtain a license, especially for dogs. Finding a veterinarian is straightforward, as there are many clinics across the island. While dog parks are not as common as in some other countries, there are designated areas and beaches where dogs are allowed. Cypriots generally have a positive attitude towards pets, but it's always good to be respectful of local customs and regulations regarding animals in public spaces. Ensure your pet's vaccinations are kept up to date, and familiarize yourself with local pet shops and services to maintain their well-being in their new home.
