Summary: Establishing residency in Bahrain can be challenging. Here are some helpful tips for expats, retirees, and nomads.

Obtaining a residency visa in Bahrain is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Bahrain gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Research Bahrain Residency Requirements
    • Visit the official website of the Nationality, Passports & Residence Affairs (NPRA) of Bahrain at NPRA for detailed information.
    • Understand the different types of visas and residency permits available, such as work visas, family visas, investor visas, etc.
  • Secure a Job or Investment Opportunity
    • Find employment in Bahrain, as a work visa is one of the most common paths to residency.
    • Alternatively, invest in Bahrain to be eligible for an investor visa.
  • Apply for a Work Visa (if applicable)
    • Obtain a job offer from a Bahraini employer.
    • Ensure that your employer applies for a work permit on your behalf through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) website at LMRA.
    • Submit the required documents, which typically include a passport copy, photos, health records, and the job contract.
  • Apply for Residency Permit
    • Once you have a work permit, apply for a residency permit through the NPRA.
    • Complete the application form available on the NPRA website.
    • Submit necessary documents, such as your passport, work permit, proof of address in Bahrain, and health records.
    • Pay the applicable fees for processing the residency permit.
  • Undergo Medical Examination
    • Schedule a medical examination at an authorized medical center in Bahrain.
    • Attend the medical examination, which may include blood tests and a chest X-ray.
    • Submit the medical report with your residency permit application.
  • Register for a Personal Identification Card (CPR)
    • Visit the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) website at iGA to learn about the Central Population Registration (CPR) system.
    • Apply for a CPR card, which is mandatory for all residents in Bahrain.
    • Provide your passport, visa details, and a passport-sized photo at the iGA service center.
  • Open a Local Bank Account
    • Choose a bank in Bahrain and visit a branch in person.
    • Present your passport, CPR card, and proof of address to open an account.
    • Complete the bank's application form and provide any additional documents they may require.
  • Apply for a Tax Number (if required)
    • Check with the Ministry of Finance whether you need to register for a tax number, as Bahrain has no personal income tax for most individuals.
    • If required, usually for business purposes, submit an application through the Ministry of Finance.
    • Provide necessary documentation, which may include your CPR card, residency permit, and business details.
  • Renew Residency Permit as Needed
    • Keep track of the expiration date of your residency permit.
    • Apply for renewal through the NPRA website before your current permit expires.
    • Submit any updated documents and pay the renewal fees.
  • Comply with Local Laws and Regulations
    • Stay informed about any changes in Bahraini immigration laws by regularly checking the NPRA and LMRA websites.
    • Ensure you maintain a valid residency status and adhere to the terms of your visa or permit.
Please note that the above steps are a general guide and the specific requirements may vary depending on your nationality, the purpose of your stay, and changes in Bahraini law. Always refer to the official Bahraini government websites for the most current information and procedures.

What tips do expats have about residency and visas in Bahrain?

"In order to visit Bahrain, visitors must obtain a visa upon arrival. The visa application process involves submitting a valid passport with at least six months of validity, a copy of your flight ticket, a valid address in Bahrain, a fee of 30 BHD, and 3 passport-sized color photos. After the application is approved, the visa validity period is 14 days. In order to obtain residence in Bahrain, the applicant can apply for an Investor’s Visa, the Non-Employment-Based Visa, the Temporary Residence Visa, or the Residence Visa for GCC nationals. An application for residence must include a valid passport with at least six months of validity, four passport-sized photos, a bank statement, documents attesting to income, and a valid address in Bahrain. Depending on the visa type, additional documents, such as a medical certificate and police clearance certificate, may also be requested. The approval period for residence in Bahrain varies based on the visa type and is typically between 1 to 3 months," commented one member living in Bahrain.
