Summary: Learn how to obtain a residency visa in Gambia. Expats, Retirees and others who have navigated the process offer advice and guidance for newcomers in Gambia.

Obtaining a residency visa in Gambia is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Gambia gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

Please note that the following instructions are a general guide and the actual process may vary. It is important to consult with the Gambian embassy or consulate, or the relevant authorities in Gambia for the most current and detailed information. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, here is a guide on how to obtain residency status in Gambia:

  • Research Gambia's residency requirements
    • Visit the official website of the Gambia Immigration Department or contact the nearest Gambian embassy to understand the current residency requirements and types of permits available.
    • Identify the type of residency permit that suits your situation (e.g., work permit, investment permit, etc.).
  • Prepare necessary documentation
    • Gather personal documents such as your passport, birth certificate, and marriage certificate (if applicable).
    • Obtain a police clearance certificate from your home country to prove you have no criminal record.
    • Prepare proof of financial means, such as bank statements or a letter from your employer.
    • Get a medical certificate from a recognized health institution confirming you are in good health.
  • Apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
    • Visit the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) website or their office to obtain the TIN application form.
    • Fill out the application form with accurate personal and financial information.
    • Submit the form along with any required documents, such as a copy of your passport and proof of address in Gambia.
    • Wait for the processing of your TIN, which you will need for the residency application.
  • Submit your residency application
    • Complete the residency permit application form, which can be obtained from the Gambia Immigration Department.
    • Attach all the required documents, including your TIN, personal documents, police clearance, proof of financial means, and medical certificate.
    • Pay the applicable fee for the residency permit application. Fees vary depending on the type of permit and duration of stay.
    • Submit your application to the Gambia Immigration Department and keep a copy of the receipt for your records.
  • Wait for the application to be processed
    • Residency applications can take several weeks or months to process. During this time, you may be required to attend an interview or provide additional information.
    • Keep in touch with the immigration office to check the status of your application.
  • Receive your residency permit
    • If your application is approved, you will be notified to collect your residency permit.
    • Review the permit to ensure all details are correct and understand the conditions of your residency, including any restrictions or reporting requirements.
  • Renew your permit as required
    • Be aware of the expiration date of your residency permit and the requirements for renewal.
    • Apply for renewal well in advance of the expiration date to maintain your legal status in Gambia.
Please note that the above steps are based on general procedures and may not reflect the most current regulations. It is essential to verify all information with the Gambian authorities. Unfortunately, as of my knowledge cutoff date, there is no official government website that I can link to for the Gambia Immigration Department or the Gambia Revenue Authority that provides detailed information in English. It is recommended to directly contact these departments or visit their offices for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

What tips do expats have about residency and visas in Gambia?

"To enter Gambia, visitors must obtain a visa prior to arrival. The process of applying for a visa involves submitting an application form, a valid passport, two passport-sized photographs, and a fee. Depending on the purpose of the visit, additional documents may be required. To apply for residency in Gambia, applicants must submit a completed application form, a valid passport, two passport-sized photographs, a medical certificate, a police clearance certificate, and a fee. Applicants may also be required to provide proof of employment, proof of financial means, and proof of accommodation.
