Summary: Discover the realities of the healthcare system in Azerbaijan and how it may serve expats, digital nomads, retirees, and others who relocate or reside in the country.

Azerbaijan has a public healthcare system that is funded by the government and is available to all citizens. The public healthcare system is called the State Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund (SCMIF). Foreigners (expats and digital nomads) are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Azerbaijan, however, it is not commonly used by foreigners. Public hospitals are generally not recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as the quality of care is not as high as private hospitals. Public hospitals in Azerbaijan are often overcrowded and lack the latest medical technology.

Azerbaijan's Private Healthcare System

Azerbaijan also has a private healthcare system that is funded by private insurance companies. Private healthcare is more expensive than public healthcare, but the quality of care is much higher. Expats primarily use private hospitals, as they are more reliable and have better facilities. Private hospitals are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they have the latest medical technology and experienced doctors. Private hospitals in Azerbaijan are well-equipped and offer a wide range of services.
