Summary: Gain insight into the health care system in Honduras. Explore its accessibility and limitations for expatriates, remote workers, retirees, and others who choose to live in Honduras.

Honduras has a public and private healthcare system. The public healthcare system is called the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS) and is available to all Honduran citizens and legal residents. Foreigners (expats and digital nomads) are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Honduras, but it is not widely used by foreigners. Public hospitals are generally not recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they are often overcrowded and understaffed. However, public hospitals are often used for minor medical issues and routine check-ups.

Honduras's Private Healthcare System

Honduras's private healthcare system is more expensive than the public system, but it is generally of higher quality. Private hospitals are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they are often better equipped and staffed than public hospitals. Expats primarily use private hospitals, and private health insurance is recommended for expats and digital nomads.

Honduras's Top Hospitals

Honduras has several well-known hospitals, both public and private. Some of the most well-known hospitals include:

  • Hospital Escuela Universitario (public) in Tegucigalpa, which specializes in trauma and emergency care.
  • Hospital San Felipe (private) in Tegucigalpa, which specializes in cardiology and oncology.
  • Hospital Metropolitano (private) in San Pedro Sula, which specializes in orthopedics and neurology.
  • Hospital La Paz (private) in Tegucigalpa, which specializes in obstetrics and gynecology.

Health Insurance Companies in Honduras

The most popular private health insurers in Honduras are Seguros La Ceiba, Seguros Atlas, and Seguros Uno. These companies offer a variety of health insurance plans, including plans for expats and digital nomads. Expats and digital nomads typically use these companies or specialized expat health insurance providers.

Insider Tips from Expats in Honduras: How to Navigate the Health System

"Honduras has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The quality of care varies from region to region, with some areas having better access to medical facilities and resources than others. Private health care is also available in Honduras, and many people opt to use private clinics and hospitals for more specialized care. The country also has a number of international hospitals and clinics that offer high-quality medical services. In general, medical services in Honduras are adequate, but there is room for improvement in terms of access and quality," commented one member living in Honduras.

"Healthcare services in Honduras are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all Honduran citizens. The quality of public healthcare varies depending on the region, but generally it is considered to be of lower quality than private healthcare. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, but they are not eligible for the same benefits as Honduran citizens. Expats in Honduras typically use private healthcare services, as they are more reliable and of higher quality. However, some expats may use the public healthcare system if they are unable to afford private healthcare," commented one member living in Honduras.
