Summary: Gain insight into the health care system in Kiribati. Explore its accessibility and limitations for expatriates, remote workers, retirees, and others who choose to live in Kiribati.

Kiribati has a public healthcare system that is available to all citizens and residents. The public healthcare system is called the Kiribati National Health Services (KNHS). Foreigners (expats and digital nomads) are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Kiribati, however, it is not used by many foreigners. Public hospitals are generally not recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as the quality of care is not as high as private hospitals. Public hospitals in Kiribati are often overcrowded and lack the necessary resources to provide quality care.

Kiribati's Private Healthcare System

Kiribati also has a private healthcare system, which is used primarily by expats and digital nomads. Private hospitals in Kiribati are more expensive than public hospitals, but they offer a higher quality of care. Private hospitals are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they have better resources and more experienced staff.

Kiribati's Top Hospitals

The following are some of the most well-known hospitals in Kiribati:

  • Tungaru Central Hospital (public, located in Tarawa)
  • Betio Hospital (public, located in Betio)
  • Kiribati Family Health Clinic (private, located in Bikenibeu)
  • Kiribati Eye Clinic (private, located in Bikenibeu)
  • Kiribati Dental Clinic (private, located in Bikenibeu)

Health Insurance Companies in Kiribati

The most popular private health insurers in Kiribati are Kiribati National Insurance Corporation (KNIC) and Kiribati Insurance Corporation (KIC). Expats and digital nomads typically use these companies, as they offer comprehensive coverage and competitive rates. Expat health insurance providers are also available, but they are not as widely used.

Insider Tips from Expats in Kiribati: How to Navigate the Health System

"Kiribati has a limited number of medical services available. The main hospital is located in the capital city of South Tarawa, and there are a few smaller health centers located on other islands. The medical services available include basic primary care, emergency care, and some specialized services such as obstetrics and gynecology. However, due to limited resources, the quality of care is not always up to the standards of other countries. Additionally, there is a shortage of medical personnel, and many of the medical staff are not adequately trained. As a result, access to medical care can be difficult for many people in Kiribati," commented one member living in Kiribati.

"Kiribati has a public healthcare system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The quality of public healthcare in Kiribati is generally considered to be adequate, although there are some shortages of medical supplies and personnel. Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, although they may need to pay for some services. Expats in Kiribati generally use the public healthcare system, although they may also opt to use private healthcare services if they are available," commented one member living in Kiribati.
