Summary: Familiarize yourself with the health system in Turkmenistan. Understand its usage options and constraints for those who choose to move to and reside there, including expats, digital nomads, and retirees.

Turkmenistan's healthcare system is a mix of public and private healthcare options. The public healthcare system is provided by the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry and is free for citizens of Turkmenistan. Foreigners (expats and digital nomads) are not allowed to use the public healthcare system in Turkmenistan. The public healthcare system is not used by foreigners and is not recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgery. Public hospitals in Turkmenistan are often overcrowded and lack modern medical equipment and supplies.

Turkmenistan's Private Healthcare System

Private healthcare in Turkmenistan is more expensive than public healthcare, but it is often of higher quality. Expats primarily use private hospitals, which are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery. Private hospitals in Turkmenistan are typically well-equipped and staffed with experienced medical professionals.

Insider Tips from Expats in Turkmenistan: How to Navigate the Health System

"Turkmenistan has a well-developed healthcare system, with a wide range of medical services available. The country has a network of hospitals, clinics, and health centers that provide primary and specialized care. The government provides free medical care to citizens, and there are also private medical facilities available. The country has a number of medical universities and research centers, and there is a strong emphasis on preventive medicine. The country also has a number of medical tourism options, with many people from neighboring countries coming to Turkmenistan for medical treatment," commented one member living in Turkmenistan.

"Healthcare services in Turkmenistan are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely funded by the government and is free for citizens of Turkmenistan. The quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be below average, with limited access to modern medical equipment and medicines. Foreign residents do not have access to the public healthcare system, and must rely on private healthcare services. Expats in Turkmenistan typically use private healthcare services, which are more expensive than public healthcare, but offer better quality care," commented one member living in Turkmenistan.
