Summary: Learn about the health system in Phnom Penh: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Phnom Penh.

The healthcare system in Phnom Penh, is a mix of public and private institutions. The quality and accessibility of healthcare services can vary greatly, with many expats and foreigners opting for private healthcare due to its higher standards.

Cambodia's Healthcare System

The public healthcare system in Cambodia, managed by the Ministry of Health, is often used by locals but is generally not recommended for foreigners due to its lower standards compared to private healthcare. Public hospitals in Phnom Penh, such as the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital, are often crowded and lack the advanced medical equipment found in private hospitals. For serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, most people, including expats, prefer private hospitals. While foreigners are allowed to use the public healthcare system, the language barrier and the lack of advanced medical facilities often deter them. On the other hand, private hospitals in Phnom Penh, such as the Royal Phnom Penh Hospital, offer a higher standard of care with English-speaking staff and modern facilities.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Phnom Penh

There are several recommended clinics and hospitals in Phnom Penh for expats. These include:

  • Royal Phnom Penh Hospital - a private hospital known for its high standard of care.
  • Calmette Hospital - a public hospital that also offers private services and is known for its trauma center.
  • Naga Clinic - a private clinic popular among expats for general healthcare.
  • European Dental Clinic - a private clinic specializing in dental care.
In case of emergencies or need for specialized medical care, expats often travel to Bangkok, Thailand, which is approximately a one-hour flight from Phnom Penh.

Emergency Services in Phnom Penh

Emergency services, including ambulance services, are available in Phnom Penh. However, response times can be slow due to traffic congestion. The emergency number in Cambodia is 119, but it's recommended to call the hospital directly if possible.

Health Insurance Companies in Phnom Penh

Several private health insurance companies operate in Phnom Penh, including Forte Insurance, Infinity Insurance, and Asia Insurance. These companies offer a range of health insurance plans suitable for both locals and expats. However, many expats and digital nomads prefer to use international health insurance providers that offer coverage in multiple countries and have plans tailored to the needs of expats.
