Summary: Explore healthcare options for expatriates and digital nomads in Atenas: uncover top-rated providers, hospitals, and medical facilities to meet your needs while living abroad in Atenas.

The healthcare system in Atenas is a blend of public and private services. The public healthcare system, known as the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), provides comprehensive coverage to citizens and residents, while private healthcare offers an alternative for those seeking faster service or specialized care.

Costa Rica's Healthcare System

The CCSS is a government-run healthcare system that provides free or low-cost healthcare to all Costa Rican citizens and legal residents, including foreigners. The quality of care in public hospitals is generally good, but wait times can be long for non-emergency procedures. For serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, many people recommend using private hospitals due to their shorter wait times and often more modern facilities. Public hospitals in Atenas, like elsewhere in Costa Rica, are typically busy and understaffed, but they are equipped to handle a wide range of medical issues. Foreigners, including expats and digital nomads, are allowed to use the public healthcare system if they are legal residents. However, many expats choose to use private hospitals for their healthcare needs.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Atenas

Atenas itself does not have a major hospital, but there are several clinics in the area, including:

  • Atenas Clinic - a small public clinic located in the center of Atenas.
  • Coopesana RL - a private clinic in nearby San Mateo.
For more serious medical needs, expats often travel to larger hospitals in San Jose, such as Hospital CIMA San Jose or Hospital Clinica Biblica, both private hospitals. These hospitals are approximately an hour's drive from Atenas.

Emergency Services in Atenas

Emergency services are available in Atenas, with ambulances operated by the Red Cross. To call for an ambulance, you would dial 911. Response times can vary depending on the location and nature of the emergency, but generally, the service is reliable.

Health Insurance Companies in Atenas

There are several popular private health insurance companies in Costa Rica that are used by residents of Atenas. These include INS, the state-run insurance company, and Pan-American Life Insurance Group, a private company. Both offer a range of plans covering different levels of care. Many expats and digital nomads also choose to use international health insurance providers that offer coverage in Costa Rica, as these can provide more flexibility and often include coverage for medical evacuation, which can be important for those living in more remote areas.
