12 Tips for Living in Merida, Mexico
By Dlee1154
An expat talks about what it's like living in beautiful Merida, Mexico where the expat community is thriving -- there's even an expat bowling league. The Merida English Library holds wine tastings, plays, concerts and more. Real estate prices are low compared to the US, but that may not be for long.
Expat Life in Merida
Oh, my, where do I start? This is my 4th country and I am here to stay! Merida has surpassed my expectations- it is a large city, with many different neighborhoods to choose from, each with their own separate, distinct vibe. Activities are everywhere- every night a park holds a free event. Centro is hopping on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The shopping is first class, many very nice new malls, and restaurants are everywhere, for every price range. Most of all for me is the culture- there are so many fine museums and homes to tour that I have made a list so that I don't forget any. And then there's the cenotes to swim or dive in, found nowhere else but the Yucatan, and the Mayan ruins nearby.
Cost of Living in Merida, Mexico
The rents here are low for now. As more people discover the richness Merida offers, I know that they will increase, but for right now, you can get a very nice apartment or rental home for a fraction of what you'd pay in the USA. My advice is if you like it here, buy sooner rather than later (very carefully). Local food is very cheap and imports are what they are.
Local Clubs and Organizations
There is a thriving Expat community here that has 2 Facebook sites and sub groups that branch from there as people make friends and form their own little group page. I am in a bowling league with Expats from the USA, Canada, England, Australia, etc. Lots of fun! And there is an English speaking library that holds meet and greets monthly, so anyone that is new can just come and make friends. There is also a Tuesday breakfast meeting. There are plenty of easy ways for you to meet people and have fun.
International Schools in Merida
N/A- I am retired. I know that there are plenty of schools that teach Spanish.
Shopping in Merida
There is everything in Merida from local street vendors, market stalls, to Super Duper big box markets. There is a Walmart that is a step above what you find in the States, Sears, and a few super duper markets that sell everything from household goods to groceries, all in one place. Several malls have recently opened, so you can shop from high end to low end, and Centro has many streets of unusual and unique shops. You will need to guard your money as these unique shops have lovely hand made items.
Public Transportation
There is a public bus system here that is very good and very cheap. Uber has a large presence here and will pick you up from anywhere in 4-10 minutes. Taxis are on the streets if you need one. All areas of Merida are safe.
Climate
Hot. In the summer it is hot day and night, with no rain. In rainy season, it is very hot during the day but the nights usually cool off to pleasant 70's with a cooling wind, but not always. You can use sleeves at night but will not want them during the day.
Restaurants and Nightlife
There are many night clubs with live music, from Salsa to Blues. There are too many restaurants to mention, from low end to high end. You will not want for a night life or if you are a foodie. I am a nght person, so I am speaking from personal experience.
What are local hospitals and emergency services like?
All hospitals and clinics are 10-15 minutes from any point in the city. Many. many medical options to choose from. They have both public, which might be a long wait, and private, substantially below USA costs.
