Mar 30, 2020 Update

We Asked: What is currently happening with regard to the Coronavirus outbreak in your area? Please provide as much detail as possible. He replied...

Essential existence places are open, like Walmart and pharmacies. Otherwise, commerce is shut down. Folks here work today so they can eat today. The governor of Jalisco has declared that the stay at home demand will last through all of April.

If this is the case, I think we will see violence world wide, that is far worse than the virus. As long as the US don't cut off my social security, I should be fine.

How People are Coping

We Asked: How are people handling the situation in your area? He replied...

Calm so far. But I expect that to change very quickly, as the local people become hungry.

Changing Conditions as coronavirus Spreads

We Asked: How has the situation changed as the Coronavirus has spread? He replied...

We have 35 assisted living and nursing homes here. If the virus gets into one of those, it will likely wipe out the whole population. But for the most part, people are keeping a safe distance from one another.

Government Response

We Asked: Describe how the government of the country about which you are reporting is handling this situation. He replied...

Stay at home order for all of April.

Government Response with Regard to Expats

We Asked: Describe how your home country's government has handled the outbreak situation with regards to its expatriate citizens. He replied...

I don't have any idea.

Supplies and Shortages

We Asked: Is there a shortage of supplies in your location? He replied...

Not yet. Essentials are still available. But that may change if the local populace becomes violent because they cannot buy food. No money if you're not working.

Preparing for the Future

We Asked: What are you doing in terms of preparations in case the situation deteriorates in your location? He replied...

I did not stock pile a lot of food. But I do have about 30% more than I normally would. Other than that, wait and see.

Lockdown & Passing the Time

We Asked: Are you staying home? If so, how are you passing the time? He replied...

I'm staying at home most of the time. I write, and counsel others online. I am also an artist, although I have not devoted much time to that of late. That is likely to change this week.

Public Healthcare & Public Hospitals

We Asked: Are you enrolled in the public healthcare system where you live? Do you feel that the public hospitals are handling or preparing for the Coronavirus outbreak effectively? He replied...

I have to go to the states if I need serious medical care. So far I can get my maintenance meds at local pharmacies.

Private Health Insurance & Private Hospitals

We Asked: Do you have private health insurance? If you have private insurance, does this give you access to private hospitals? Are private hospitals or clinics better prepared, less prepared, or the same? Please explain. He replied...

I use the VA in Harlingen, Texas. I have a local doctor, but my health is very good. So as long as I stay somewhat isolated, I should be ok.

Hospital of Choice for Coronavirus Treatment

We Asked: Would you choose a public or private hospital if you needed treatment for Coronavirus? Why? If there is a specific hospital that you would go to in the event of severe illness? Which hospital and why? He replied...

I'm 76, but in good health. If I did get the virus, I'd likely stay home and ride it out. If I make it, fine. If I don't, someone will find me eventually. :)

Returning Home

We Asked: Are you considering returning to your home country due to the Coronavirus? Would this be a temporary move or a permanent repatriation? Please explain. He replied...

No. I feel I can fare much better here, that returning to the USA. I've been here for 1 1/2 years. I have no intention of returning to the US.
