Apartment Rental

I am a single retiree and I plan on moving to the Dominican Republic in March of 2016. My focus is on Santo Domingo. My research shows many Aparthotels in the $900 range but most of more expensive. However, to rent a nice furnished or unfurnished apartment, a Guarantor is required. I have been unable to find any posts on how to work around the Guarantor issue. Can anyone share their personal experience with the Guarantor requirement?
