Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs to Visit Haiti (postponed).
Submitted by Business Desk on May 26, 2009 - 12:17 The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will visit Haiti from May 26 to 28. The Minister’s visit will underline Canada’s engagement in Haiti and demonstrate Canada’s continued solidarity with that country.

“I look forward to seeing first-hand the concrete results of the leading role that Canada plays in Haiti,” said Minister Cannon. “Canada has a special relationship with Haiti owing to our linguistic ties and our history of diplomatic and people-to-people links.”

Canada’s commitment to Haiti is a key element of its foreign policy and engagement in the Americas. Haiti is the second-largest beneficiary of Canadian development aid.

While in Haiti, Minister Cannon will meet with President René Préval, Prime Minister Michèle Pierre-Louis and members of the Haitian cabinet. Minister Cannon will also meet with partners from the international community and the United Nations, Canadians established in Haiti, members of the Haitian business community and civil society representatives.

During his visit, Minister Cannon will visit a Canadian-funded project that aims to enhance Haiti’s capacity to secure and monitor its borders.

“This is a critical time for Haiti, and I want to personally convey to our Haitian partners the message that Canada will continue to deliver on its significant engagement toward the stabilization and development of Haiti,” said the Minister.

Canada adopts a whole-of-government approach in implementing its assistance program in Haiti. This approach involves the Canadian International Development Agency, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
