What an amazing resource this is! I am an American grad student planning to spend about a year in 2010 researching in Algeria. While I have never before visited Algeria, I have studied in Tunisia for a semester during my undergrad education and have language skills in both French and Arabic (primarily MSA).
I primarily wish to ask your thoughts on the appropriate living arrangements for a young female foreigner. I would like to act in the most proprietous manner possible so as to fit in. As I will be travelling on my own, would it be appropriate for me to live by myself or would this arouse consternation? My hope is to divide my time between Algiers, Constantine, and Oran (spending about three to four months in each).
I have a keen fascination with Algeria and greatly look forward to spending time there, but also want to take every precaution to make it a pleasant and safe stay. Thank you in advance for any information you can pass on to me!
