True Apartment Cost for a Foreigner

I keep hearing things like getting a nice apartment in BsAs for 1/3 or 1/4 of the price of a similar apartment in other major cities. I recently spend just over a week in BsAs in March and we paid just under $700USD for that time for an average size (maybe 600 sq ft) apartment with balcony in Recloetta. If we're talking a monthly price here it's up to probably $2,000 USD. Did we overpay because we used a property management company who markets to foreigners? Most places online seemed to charge similar prices.

Where and how can we find these nice sized apartments in BsAs and upgrade our living style for half the price? Basically... how can a foreigner pay the local BsAs rates that a local resident would pay? Advice??
