getting a permanent residency

Hi we will be moving to OZ on a 457 visa next year.. our hope is to be able to change this over to permananet residency once we have been living there for some time. Has any one done this and can you let me know what the process is?? is it easier if you have already been living and working there and have a job?? Any help would be great, thanks Jo
