March Monthly Luncheon - Professor. Katrina McFerran

"Depending on music to make you feel better: Good idea / Bad idea?"

Dr Katrina McFerran is Associate Professor in the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Head of Music Therapy.

After many years of working with young people in hospitals, schools and community programs, Katrina's research interests have focused on the ways that young people engage with music to 'feel better'.

This has involved challenging assumptions about the power of music to influence people's mood and behavior. In contrast, Dr McFerran's research has shown that young people appropriate music in ways that reflect their capacity for health -- sometimes resulting in positive change, and at other times reinforcing negative states.

She emphasizes the importance of intentional and conscious decisions by young people about their ways musical engagement and highlights risk and protective factors that have been identified in her research.

This is seen to be particularly pertinent in an age where music access is almost unlimited and the potential of music as a preventative health strategy is becoming increasingly interesting to the masses.
