Arizona to Australia

My wife and I are seriously considering leaving the United States and moving to Australia to join the expat community and evaluate what to do from there. We've never done anything like this before and have tons of questions. We spent most of the day looking through the various visa requirements and it was enough to make our heads spin. Any insights would be welcome.

Perhaps a good question to ask is, how welcome will we even be? Right now our country is not too popular (one of the reasons we want to leave). We don't want to leave one place only to find ourselves somewhere where we may not be well received.
